Bugcheck Error Code 0x00000116 while Playing a Video Game

Anonymous
2018-04-02T01:22:06+00:00

I was playing a video game (S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl) when the screen suddenly went black and would not display a signal. The keyboard also became unresponsive (pressing num-lock or caps-lock did not turn on or off their indicator lights). The only way I could get my computer to respond again was by turning it off by pressing the power button and turning it back on again. (The reset button did not work.) I tried playing the game again, but after about twenty minutes minutes my computer crashed in the same way. I have played other games, both newer and older, that have not had this problem. Everyday tasks also do not cause my computer to crash in this way either.

When I checked the event viewer, I saw Event 41 Kernel-Power listed around the time my computer crashed. How do I resolve this issue?

My system consists of:

AMD RX-470 4GB GPU

Intel Pentium G4560 CPU

8GB RAM (2x4GB sticks)

EVGA 550W Gold PSU

Windows 10

Listed below are the event properties.

Jut to clarify - Performance monitor shows the total over both cores. Resource monitor show use on each core.

I think it's safe to assume both cores of your cpu are running @100%, and without the game running the cpu is not being used

much at all as we sit here on the forum.

If the cpu and gpu are both running at 100% it would not necessarily be a problem straight away, but when the action heats up,

or the graphics require more processing at a particular point due to more NPC's or more graphics details  the game is likely to crash

due to the extra processing requirements.

Normally a game will lag first, but not always. Particularly if your fps is already very low.

It is not uncommon for the gpu to run at 99-100% without issues though.

Reducing some graphics settings should help prevent the game from crashing.

I'm not actually sure which graphics settings use cpu more than gpu so you need to experiment. I believe Anti-aliasing can be

both cpu intensive and VRAM intensive (not a problem with 4GB VRAM).

The 2009 patch is desirable as I believe is fixes some bugs as well as improving on the graphics, but if you can't improve performance

by lowering some settings you may have to reinstall without the 2009 patch as that may require more resources than the base game.

(I just compared cpu use with  Call of Pripyat which I only got a few weeks ago, and haven't play beyond the first few minutes,

but  the cpu use is averaging in the min 20's with brief bumps up to 30+ when I approach some structures. This could be

due to Call of Pripyat being better optimised than SC though.

With SC my cpu use peaks at 40% and averages in the mid/high 30's . My gpu use is at or near 100% )

[EDIT: Just had another go with SC and the cpu use was only around 17% in same area. Wonder why it was so

high the a few days ago ?  Strange science... ]

    • Note that if your gpu does not run near 100% with high cpu use you may be using too many low settings.

All low settings can divert processing from the gpu to the cpu. So if this is happening try ramping up the settings rather

    than lowering them.

    • Unfortunately, your cpu is a low end model and not really what would be considered a gaming cpu.

The clock speed is good, but there is more to cpu processing than raw clock speeds.

An i3 would be minimum, but an i5 is desirable.

When I Alt+Tab out of the game to performance monitor and task manager, I can see that my CPU 0 is near 100% when playing the game.

Is this what is causing the issue? If so, how can I fix it?

I am also running Complete 2009 mod (v1.4.4) - (thought I had installed something like this, but normally keep the download).

Without dual monitor, or a keyboard with an LCD display,  you can open Task Manager > Performance then

Highlight cpu and leave it open.

When the game crashes you will get a view of the last 60sec of overall cpu use if you use the Normal update speed, or 4min with Low speed

    (In the View tab)

Or, to monitor use of both cores, open Resource Monitor (at bottom of Performance) click on the cpu tab.

Select View > Large (your choice) above the monitors.  Leave Resource Monitor open and close the Task Manager Window.

The total cpu use by everything you have running at the time over both cores is what is important,

but to get an idea of what only the game uses. In addition to the above...

Start the game and Alt+TAB out of the game.

Tic the box next to Image in the left column. Then tic the box next to the games exe ( XR_3DA.exe).

Similarly to Performance you will see the last 60sec/4min of cpu use.

    • There are also 3rd party cpu use monitoring tools that would create a log file out in the wild, but I've never used one

so wouldn't know which to recommend (I have a Logitech G13 controller which has an LCD that displays Windows Performance monitor).

    Thank you for replying BossDweeb!

    To answer your questions:

I have only recently installed the game—the day I first posted error was the day I installed the game.

The game does not crash in certain areas or during heavier action; I could be staring at the ground and it will still crash.

I have installed the Complete 2009 mod (v1.4.4) for the game.

My GPU and CPU temps are very low. My GPU was at 47°C immediately after crashing and my CPU was at 45°C immediately after crashing.

How do I monitor my CPU usage during the game if it keeps crashing? Can I find the historical usage data somewhere?

All of my graphics drivers are up to date.

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding,

    crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

You get this error anytime you don't shut down or reboot via Windows.

It is a good idea to reboot via Windows any time you have to do a forced shut down/reboot via the reboot button,

holding down power button, or switching off at the power supply, as this allows Windows to sort out any settings

it may have done during a normal shut down/reboot.

The rest of the error is unfit for human interpretation.

    • Have you only recently installed the game, or has is suddenly started having problems ?
    • Does the game always crash in the same areas, or when engaged in heavier action ?
    • Have you installed any mods  ?
    • Have you verified your cpu and gpu temps are not too high ?

Also check and see how much of your cpu is being used by the game. This game is fairly cpu heavy. I have

around 36% use over four cores, but core 1 is @ 100%, so it may be your dual core cpu is being overwhelmed with the

    settings you are using ?

    • Because you are only having the problem with the one game, and assuming the newer games are as system intensive

as Stalker SC, there may be an issue with the game itself. This game is buggy, and crash prone.

I haven't done more than verify the game still runs on Win10, but do recall it crashing quite a bit when I played

it actively on Win7 (I seem to recall the areas with 'anomalies' being particularly prone to crashing) .

I believe I may have installed a high res texture pack, but don't have it in my files, so maybe not ?

[ EDIT: Looking at the games files, it looks like I didn't bother using this.  I do still have a 3GB fix though

(a few older games don't recognise more than 2GB VRAM and need fixes to access more. GTA4 is another). ]

    • If you recently did the Win10 1709 version update, you may need to update your AMD drivers with the latest version

from AMD.  Drivers from Windows Updates or via Device Manager may not be the most recent version.
