Jut to clarify - Performance monitor shows the total over both cores. Resource monitor show use on each core.
I think it's safe to assume both cores of your cpu are running @100%, and without the game running the cpu is not being used
much at all as we sit here on the forum.
If the cpu and gpu are both running at 100% it would not necessarily be a problem straight away, but when the action heats up,
or the graphics require more processing at a particular point due to more NPC's or more graphics details the game is likely to crash
due to the extra processing requirements.
Normally a game will lag first, but not always. Particularly if your fps is already very low.
It is not uncommon for the gpu to run at 99-100% without issues though.
Reducing some graphics settings should help prevent the game from crashing.
I'm not actually sure which graphics settings use cpu more than gpu so you need to experiment. I believe Anti-aliasing can be
both cpu intensive and VRAM intensive (not a problem with 4GB VRAM).
The 2009 patch is desirable as I believe is fixes some bugs as well as improving on the graphics, but if you can't improve performance
by lowering some settings you may have to reinstall without the 2009 patch as that may require more resources than the base game.
(I just compared cpu use with Call of Pripyat which I only got a few weeks ago, and haven't play beyond the first few minutes,
but the cpu use is averaging in the min 20's with brief bumps up to 30+ when I approach some structures. This could be
due to Call of Pripyat being better optimised than SC though.
With SC my cpu use peaks at 40% and averages in the mid/high 30's . My gpu use is at or near 100% )
[EDIT: Just had another go with SC and the cpu use was only around 17% in same area. Wonder why it was so
high the a few days ago ? Strange science... ]
- Note that if your gpu does not run near 100% with high cpu use you may be using too many low settings.
All low settings can divert processing from the gpu to the cpu. So if this is happening try ramping up the settings rather
than lowering them.
- Unfortunately, your cpu is a low end model and not really what would be considered a gaming cpu.
The clock speed is good, but there is more to cpu processing than raw clock speeds.
An i3 would be minimum, but an i5 is desirable.
