Incorrect Temperature Readings w/ AMD A10-5700 APU

First time poster, but I've seemed to exhausted my options.

I have an HP Envy 23-c059 x64 AiO PC running Win10 10.0.16299. Months ago, I noticed that the brightness controls were missing (from the notification center, control panel, power options, etc, etc), Catalyst Control Center was gone and my fans were pinned at 100%. This was long after the jump from Windows 8.

I've only looked into this recently, and I noticed that programs such as Piriform's Speccy and HWINFO read the APU temperature as around 110 celsius at idle. However, tools such as CoreTemp (geared for AMD chipsets) reads the temperature at 19 degrees, which seems much more appropriate given CPU usage is at 1%. So the sensor is being misinterpreted by Windows..?

I then decided to look into BIOS and see whether I could set a higher thresholds for the fans to spin up, but my fan controls are locked, and there are no temperature readouts.

Given that my screen brightness is locked, Catalyst control is gone, and my temperature readings are borked, what would be the best course of action? It really sounds like a bunch of driver issues, but all at once? Currently I have my CPU usage limited to 60% in my power plan just to avoid max throttle fans. With this limit, Speccy reads 70 degrees idle, CoreTemp reads 19.

Is it a lack of HP supported Windows 10 drivers for previously Windows 8 machines?

If you're unable to install the display adapter driver even in compatibility mode, I recommend downloading the driver from AMD's support website. For your convenience, you can select Automatically Detect and Install your Driver.

If the temperature issue continues, you can run the Power troubleshooter to scan your laptop for any misconfiguration with your power options. You will need administrative access to run this tool.

    1. Select the Start button.
    2. Type Troubleshoot and then hit Enter.
    3. Select Power under Find and fix other problems.
    4. Click Run the troubleshooter.
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

You can also refer to HP's guide from this link. The page has steps on how to reduce heat inside your laptop to prevent overheating.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

    Hello Defaultion,

The inaccurate temperature readings that you're getting with your HP device might be due to a driver or program misconfiguration. I'll need more information to properly address your concern. Please answer the following questions:

    • When did the issue start?
    • Are you getting any error messages?
    • How did you install the drivers? Did you install with Windows Update, or did you download the drivers from the HP's support website?
    • What is the current OS Build of your Windows 10 Version 1709 system? You can find this information by clicking the Start button, type About your PC, press Enter, and then scroll down to Windows specifications.

As an initial troubleshooting, I recommend running the troubleshooter for hardware and devices. This will scan and fix your Windows device with any misconfiguration detected with your device drivers. You will need administrative access to run this tool.

    1. Select the Start button.
    2. Type Troubleshoot and then hit Enter.
    3. Select Hardware and Devices under Find and fix other problems.
    4. Click Run the troubleshooter.
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Please respond back with the results.

No items in the Device Manager are listed with warning signs, even after checking for hardware changes.

(I've checked all of the entries per category, none are flagged)

The detailed information on the troubleshooter also doesn't yield much information, as shown below.

Detection details only provide the time/date, PC name, Windows version and architecture. No other information is provided :S

Thank you for that information. To identify which driver is having an issue, we can scan your system for hardware changes.

    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Type Device Manager and then hit Enter.
    3. Click Action > Scan for hardware changes.
    4. Check which device driver has a yellow exclamation mark.

The troubleshooter report also shows which driver is having issues performing. Simply click View detailed information to for more details about the issue.

We'll be waiting for the results.

The issue started a few months ago, I'm afraid I don't really have an accurate timeframe. There are no error messages at all, and the drivers were installed from Windows Update.

The current OS build is 16299.371

Running the troubleshooter detects that the computer must be restarted to complete installation of drivers, but doesn't specify what drivers are being affected. After restarting, the readouts still differ and the troubleshooter re-detects the problem.

Would there be some kind of log file for troubleshooters, or some way to get more detailed results?

Thank you very much for the quick reply!
