WIndows 10 1803 update on Surface Pro 3

Windows 10 1803 update fails to install on my Surface Pro 3. It installed successfully on my Lenovo T430 and on my I5-6600 desktop, without having to do anything, such as removing or disabling software. My SP3 has the exact same software setup and settings, including antivirus and utilities. I had the exact same problem updating to the 1709 build: my SP3 was the only computer that failed to update. Disabling my AV didn't work either, but disabling the Windows Firewall did. This isn't working for the 1803 build.

Windows lets me sign in and gives me the Privacy Settings screen, and then locks up when loading. I either get a blanks screen or a White window. I've tried to install several times, having to always go back to the previous version, and even that sometimes takes several reboots to work. The last message I get, before the sign-in screen, is that Windows is 52% done installing updates.

I find it terrible that the only computer I have trouble installing Windows 10 updates is the only Microsoft computer I own. Also, I shouldn't have to do something sophomoric, such as uninstalling AV software when disabling it accomplishes the same thing. The 1803 build may be a nice package but the installation software definitely needs work.

Just an update: Nothing worked. I went through numerous attempts, having the system crash, re-installing from a disk image which also crashed, etc.., I finally bit the bullet and reinstalled Windows, using the 1803 Build. It now works. I had to re-install all my software, but didn't need to enter a Product Key. My SP3 is the only computer out of 4 that had a problem. I even had a Nuvision 8" tablet that updated while I wasn't looking, the sneaky little bugger. Thanks again, for your time.

Rather than getting into technicalities and analyzing log files, you should upgrade this to 1803 manually.

    1. Right click on Windows Start > Windows Powershell (Admin)

Type following (or copy and paste following) one by one and Enter

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop cryptSvc

    net stop bits

    net stop msiserver

    Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

    net start wuauserv

    net start cryptSvc

    net start bits

    net start msiserver

    1. Type following in Windows Start Search box and hit Enter %systemroot%\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log to something else.

If it doesn't allow you to rename - Type services in Windows Start Search box > Click Services > Scroll down to find the Windows Modules Installer service and double-click on it > Set its startup type to Manual > Reboot your computer

Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log > Reboot your computer > Then go back into the Services App and set Windows Modules Installer Service back to Automatic Startup (Note CBS log files contain information about windows update, SFC etc)

    OR

3.2 You can download the latest Windows 10 package from this link (media creation tool) and follow the instructions there to upgrade. Use the very simple instructions given under Using this tool to upgrade this PC to Windows 10

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, this didn't solve my problem. I'll do a little more research and see what I can find.
