Cannot access the Internet using IE on Windows XP

I have had to reinstall the Windows XP software on my old laptop to run a legacy teaching program. When I use Internet Explorer (as installed) it blocks my access to the internet. I vaguely remember this problem from way back & think it refers to a security setting, but can't find one that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get agent switcher for Firefox. You can use it to trick some sites that you are running a new OS and the site will work or almost work depending on the site.

Did you install XP SP3 update?

Thanks for your reply. I have installed XP SP3 since my post (Internet Explorer didn't work, Window Update didn't work - both because I couldn't access the internet - so I couldn't install SP3 before), but managed to download a legacy copy of FireFox 36 which worked perfectly.

Everything is fine now, but it was a struggle. For anyone interested, downloading an old version of Internet Explorer became "impossible" because my more modern laptops wouldn't allow me to get to the older version and kept telling me that my operating system was for example Windows 7 and that is what will be downloaded, and there was no way to change that. I eventually found a copy of FireFox 36 on https://filehippo.com which is the last updated version from Mozilla for Windows XP.

Thank you for your help anyway.
