I am unable to install Window Updates - Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

The update always returns error message  "80073712  Windows Update encountered an ubknown error", and update history shows status  "Failed"

All other updates, Optional and Important, install OK

The "Microsoft help" information/guidence does not help to resolve the problem

Please could someone advise how to resolve this issue?

    Hi Dave,

If you are unable to install specific cumulative updates, you can download them manually or directly. Visit this site: Microsoft Update Catalog and search for this specific KB update that cannot be installed on your computer.

Once you’ve found it, start downloading. Before you attempt to install it, we would also recommend turning off your anti-virus temporarily and get a stable Internet connection.

Let us know if the installation gets successful.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

There are 2 files shown under KB4093118 (windows 7 x64) in the Microsoft Update catalog site

I have downloaded both the files, but when I try to run either of them, I am presented with a message asking me to choose the program to open the file.

How do I manually install the Windows Update?

If you still encounter errors or Windows Update will not continue, we recommend that you download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Once there, select the troubleshooter for Windows 7.

Visit this link: Windows Update Frequently Asked Questions for more workarounds to resolve this update issue.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply

I noticed that the downloaded file extensions were _msu and  _exe. Presumably changed during the download process?

    I renamed  _msu to  .msu

Disabled MS security essentials (as advised)

Ran the .msu update.  This proessed for a while, but then failed.

Since you've already downloaded both, run the .exe file instead of .msu. It acts as an installer of a KB update. Make sure that you don't relocate those files to another folder when you execute the installer.
