Windows 7 SP1 reinstall and KB976902

Want to know if somebody has had this issue so I don't waste more time than necessary...

Started Windows 7 SP1 re-install from Dell SP1 media from 2011.  Followed Instructions from Dell Support article "Windows 7 update is not working"... which is also noted in the Microsoft Community.

After getting these two updates install (screenshot of JUST THESE two installed - KB3020369 & KB3125574), Dell drivers, and security software, updated using Windows Update.  Reviewed the list of about 27 updates.  One was KB976932 - "Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64 based systems".  Some suggested it was a poorly worded update ... surely Microsoft would not install SP1 on top of SP1.  I failed to do my homework, I guess.  While Windows worked, after I added Nvidia Driver...the shutdown slowed to 4 minutes... I thought it was slow shutdown before that.  Boot was normally fast.  From there it went downhill and then to would not boot into Windows at all.  Image (from just the Windows install and drivers) would not work.

Later, I booted via Safe Mode ... didn't work once or twice... then was slow ... and I think I selected "boot last last successful Windows boot" or something to that effect.  it worked.  TOOK ME BACK to just before the 27 updates... with the ONE exception

  • there is KB976902 - which was NOT even on the list of 27 updates.  So, there are three updates and I don't know if I need to go back or forward.

In another Microsoft forum thread I read where somebody in 2013 said that read "you need this KB976902 update before you can install sp1".  So. it would make sense that Windows Update does not think SP1 is installed and then adds this update automatically so it can install the SP1 that I already have installed?

Go figure ?

We appreciate you for getting back to us. If you’re having issues with the link that was provided by Azeez N, kindly refer to the resolution provided in this article. This article has the same content with the resolution provided by Azeez N.

If the issue persists, we recommend that you perform reinstalling of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and defer update for KB976932 if it’s still being offered to install from Windows Update. You may refer in these articles on how to **Install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)**and how to Hide Windows 7 Updates

    Update us with the outcome.

    Hi Bob,

Windows 7 SP1 helps keep your PC on the latest support level. It also provides ongoing improvements to the Windows Operating System (OS), by including previous updates (like KB976902) delivered over Windows Update as well as continuing incremental updates to the Windows 7 platforms based on customer and partner feedback. This KB976902 is an update that prepares the system when a new update is released.

If you’re having problem with this KB976902 update, you can refer to the resolution provided by Azeez N in this thread. If there’s any updates that’s available on your device, we recommend that you install those updates. But if you’re having issues with Windows Update, kindly refer in this article on how to Fix Windows Update issues.

Feel free to reach out to us for further concerns.

    Thanks for your reply.

The "resolution provided by Azeez N" is from January, 2011.  The first link in his response takes you to "404, Page Not Found".   In short, it is outdated and does not address my questions.  The 2nd link states "This guided walk-through provides steps to fix problems with Windows Updates, such as taking a long time to scan, or error codes while installing updates."  I'm not getting any of those error codes.

Somebody at Microsoft knows the answers to these questions.

    1. Why did Windows Update offer to install Win 7 SP1 (KB976932) on a Win 7 SP1 install?
    2. Why did Windows Update install (KB976902) when it was NOT on the list of selected updates to install?
    3. Does (KB976902) being installed mess with (KB3020369 & KB3125574) as they were supposed to be the ONLY TWO to install on top of Win 7 SP1 - in order for the new Windows Update process to work correctly?   Note: the update with ONLY those two was rather fast.  It did lock up once but it was noted in another support article that that might happen.
    4. Should I AGAIN reinstall SP1 from the Dell Win 7 SP1 media  and just HIDE KB976932 if is offered for install by Windows Update.

The ONLY possible help I saw from those links is trying Restore Point (I did two during the install process).  That would likely remove the Dell drivers.  But, I don't think that will remove (KB976902)... I guess I will find out.
