One Note File Location & Backups

One Note has stopped syncing for over a month, so I decided to manually copy the files, and to run the backup "now" option.

however both the default notebook location, and the backup folder are empty.... I cannot find my files anywhere... after pressing back up all now, it said successful, however there's nothing there...

I am worried I'm going to lose data on these if I have a system error or HDD crash, how can I find the files?

The app be may be having issues since more than 1 problem is occurring. I’d Try to reset, then repair if that doesn’t work. (Save all your notes to another location, preferably external media before this, just in case)

Click start - settings - apps - onenote - advanced - reset. See if you can now save/and your files sync. If no luck, click start and type control panel. From there open programs and features. Then find office/onenote on the list and right click and repair.

    See if that helps.

I’m also happy we were able to find them!

Let me know if I can do anything else, and If not, Have yourself a great rest of your week, and please leave a positive review if possible!
    Thanks!

Thanks, I was able to find them there.  However why are they not in the locations I specify in OneNote, and I'm also confused about why sync stopped working.

Means I can't use my laptop to view notes on the go.

At least I can make sure I take a backup now, thanks!

I know you said “default” location in your original post, I’m just hoping the path you have and this one differ.

If this doesn’t work, I have a couple file recovery software tools I’ve had success with in the past.

    https://www.easeus.com/file-recovery/recover-de...

    https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva

You can give both of these a shot. now these are both 3rd party apps, and I trust them. Free to use.

    Hi Dave,

Check this link out - https://support.office.com/en-us/article/change...

I’m hoping they went to the default save location, here:

On Windows 10, the Backup folder for your notebooks is located at C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\version\Backup.

If you can’t find AppData, follow the steps below and it’ll appear.

Click start, type "control panel" - open it

Look for file explorer options - open it and click the "view" tab

Make sure "show hidden files...." is checked off.

Let me know if this helps!
