Windows update 1803 made series of issues and clean reinstallation struck at "We need to get a few more things polished up for you and Windows will be all yours. Looking forward to helping you out!"

I got series of boot issues after forced upgrade to 1803 from grey screen to desktop folder missing inside "[C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile](https://www.quora.com/What-should-I-do-now-Please-read-the-details)" after boot and machine becoming non usable. Finally thought of clean installation and it struck at below stage for last 1 hour.

"We need to get a few more things polished up for you and Windows will be all yours. Looking forward to helping you out!"

The struggle started 15 days back when I got the forced update to 1803. Anything to be done to get the above issue fixed.

Below are the answers to expected questions.

My machine is Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series. Has 6GB RAM, i3 processor. 1TB HDD. Clean installation tried from USB drive.

Thanks in advance

Joy

Thanks for the quick replies. I was able to fix with one more installation with 1703. This time I have given Cortana permission to understand about me and it worked. Last time I have disabled it by unchecking the tick button which allows Cortana to understand me and that time installation struck in below step. Something very strange.

"We need to get a few more things polished up for you and Windows will be all yours. Looking forward to helping you out!"

After installation disabled the update service from services.msc. Hope it won't do any force update to latest versions. For sometime ready to face security challenges since a working machine is important as it dont have any of my personal data in it except the Live id based login :)

Great. Just a little bit, 1703 is going to phased out in October so you should upgrade to a later release after that

Sorry, this is widely reported currently. Please see the Microsoft's QA on this:

There is a somewhat technical solution I have written here which would save everything:

Hey Joymon, I've had the same problem before and I'll share the fix that worked for me. This may be a hardware problem when windows gets stuck.

Firstly is create a Windows 10 April 2018 update install media with this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

Unplug all USB devices, go into your PC case, and unplug the SATA cable from your DVD/CD drive

Unless you absolutely need something plugged in, unplug and and try again. Let me know if this helps.

Unfortunately, you will have to perform a new install. This appears to be a serious bug many are encountering with the new version of Windows 10.

I am going to recommend you downgrade to Windows 10 1703.

Yes, not the best news you want to hear. These feature updates are not thoroughly engineered and are rushed mostly to meet deadlines. They have become highly unnecessary in some instances. My opinion, focus on the apps and less on having the latest version of Windows. If your apps are working fine and you are getting your work done, minimize your need to jump on the latest release.

Now, get ready to go back to your previous version. I recommend Windows 10 1703 because its the most stable and efficient release to date.

Step 1: Go to another working computer with Internet access, download Windows 10 1703 from the following link:

    https://tb.rg-adguard.net/index.php?sid=74a7cf5...

    Choose the following:

    • Windows Final
    • Windows 10, version 1703
    • Windows 10 Pro + Home
    • English
    • x64 (64 bit) x32 (32 bit)

Step 2: create a bootable copy

Step 3: perform a custom install

Step 4: how to recover your files from Windows.old:

Windows Update might attempt to upgrade to Windows 10 1803 again. See instructions how to block it:
