Display and WiFi Turn Off While Hard Drives are Still Running

Issue

PC will shut off display and WiFi for unknown reasons. Unsure if other features are affected.

Support Number: 1430449625

This is a big deal for me as I use this PC remotely.

Observations

This seemingly happens randomly, but most often at night.

Latest occurrence happened around 2:45 AM (EST) 2018-06-20.

Power supply (PSU), fans and hard drives are still running when issue occurs.

After restart at about 8:45 (EST) 2018-06-20, some open programs showed auto saves around 6:30 AM (EST) 2018-06-20.

Happened on two separate PC builds with the only commonality being the hard drives (HDDs).

The display issue has occurred while running graphically demanding applications on my previous PC, but there may have been a separate cause for that (see Related Articles). There is a similar known bug with the sleep function where when you wake the PC up, the display stays off.

I restart my PC about once a week, but obviously more often when this issue occurs.

Whether or not my Motherboard displays an error code

Whether my built in graphics card fans stop

Thoughts

before you ask, yes my drivers are up to date. My power settings are set to a custom high performance (see Power Settings). I've replaced all my hardware at least once since the first time this occurred with the exception of the HDDs. The common denominator here seems to be the OS. I've done a system repair before, but aside from a clean OS install I don't know what else to do. I have yet to identify the root cause other than it seems to be an OS issue.

I have had a suspicion it could be related to forced Windows 10 updates, but I'm unsure. I've noticed that some recent Windows 10 updates have had trouble installing at times, and end in failure.

Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update

There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information. this may help:

Advanced Micro Devices - System - 4/17/2018 12:00:00 AM - 1.0.0.55 - Error 0x80248007

At this point I do not know how to identify the issue, as I'm not technical enough to either: test my hardware for recurring issues, or identify all the Windows 10 settings I may have missed.

You might want to consider downgrading to a previous release.

There seems to be some early adopter issues at this time with Windows 10 1803, if you can, I recommend you downgrade to your previous version until the Spring Creators Update matures with future cumulative updates.

Open Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery > under Go back to my previous version of Windows 10, click Get started.

    or

Press Control + Alt + Delete

    Click Sign out

At the Sign In screen, hold down the shift key on your keyboard while clicking the Power button on the screen

Continue to hold down the shift key while clicking Restart

Continue to hold down the shift key until the Advanced Recovery Options menu appears

    Click Troubleshoot

    Click Advanced options

Click Go back to the previous version of Windows

Windows Update might attempt to upgrade to Windows 10 1803 again. See instructions how to block it:

    Thanks Andre,

This was turned on, I turned it off.

Doesn't quite explain the display issue, but perhaps this is half solved.

    Here's hoping.

Disable Energy Efficient Ethernet in "Client for Microsoft Networks"

    Press Windows key + X

Click Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right-click the adapter > Properties > Power Management, and then clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.

If you don't have that option, see other ways to disable it:

    Thanks Dadof 5,

Unfortunately I've been down that road already more than once. I've done this for other people as well, but in all cases it either didn't resolve the issue, or the issue reappears later.

I'm hoping someone knows of a system setting, known bug or tools I can use to identify the cause. I could periodically reinstall the OS, but I'd rather try to identify the cause. Reinstalling the OS is a pretty big hassle to do periodically.
