Yes, I figured installing and uninstalling would work. Well I am glad you got it fixed.
I have tried to uninstall Avira Antivirus in Safe Mode...no luck. Windows 10 can't install updates because Avira is still lurking on my PC.
Help!!! I made the mistake of installing Avira Antivirus on my PC a couple of years ago. After a year it became a bother and I tried to uninstall it using Windows native uninstaller. Thought that it worked but later I discovered that I couldn't install certain software (long forgotten now) until I uninstalled Avira...What? I tried a couple of third party uninstallers that claimed they could uninstall anything...NOT! I tried going into Safe Mode and using regedit...wouldn't work!
Any suggestions?

You can also try and do a refresh install and keep your files and settings and then try to install whatever you can not now because of it.
Or you can backup your files and program installers and do a clean install.

2018-06-09T00:51:22+00:00 Well I say to go to control panel>>Programs and features and uninstall the anti virus program like you would any other installed program and restart your PC.
If you deleted files as mentioned by others before uninstalling, that is foolish and can cause it to not be able to be uninstalled. I am amazed of some of the suggestions I see on here.
If you have uninstalled it properly and restarted PC and still have this issue, then you might need to manually delete some of that programs files.
I would go into registry as last resort and enter the antivirus program name in find now and every registry entry for it, delete it and continue searching registry until all entries are deleted and restart pc.
When I first uninstalled the Avira Antivirus program, I did as you (or anybody) would normally do, using the native Windows uninstall tool. I thought that was the end of it but it wasn't. Months later I ran into problems that indicated remnants of Avira still were on my computer. I posted a question online and several replies suggested that the Windows uninstaller was the best program out there and perhaps a third party app would be better. I went to Tucows and downloaded a couple of different uninstaller programs and ran them and that seemed to clear out the remnants. It didn't, but I didn't find that out until Windows 10 tried to update and ran into...yep, Avira Antivirus was still on my computer! Regedit didn't work, it found the lurking lines of Avira code but wouldn't allow me to delete them, not even in safe mode. Thanks for your suggestions, but I've been there, done that.

2018-06-08T20:05:50+00:00 Hi Kevin, I thought so . . .
You need to delete this file and then try the update again . . .
c:\windows\system32\drivers\avipbb.sys
I tried to delete the file and was told I needed Admin privileges. I double checked and I DO have Admin privileges, but still can't delete the file...man this is frustrating!
