Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 850 Firmware Update Fails

Hi.

Last night my PC updated to the Windows 10 April 2018 release. Afterwards I got a notification saying that my Microsoft Wireless 850 keyboard needed the firmware updating for security reasons.

I clicked the link which took me to a Microsoft page specific to my keyboard and I clicked the Update Firmware link there. This downloaded a small executable but it failed to run. When I clicked on more information it took me to another page saying there was a problem with SHIM and my version of .NET ?

I "chatted" online to 3 Microsoft support agents about this:-

  1. the first reverted my keyboard drivers. This stopped my keyboard working completely! He then ended the call and left me for dead.
  2. the second then wanted to charge me to fix the problem that Microsoft created! After a small discussion she agreed to help and reverted my PC to the last system restore point. Obviously the PC rebooted but she said she would reconnect afterwards or call me back - she never did and the system restore had failed and the keyboard STILL wasn't working!
  3. the third agent eventually got my keyboard working again by downloading more updates and drivers. This was going to take a while so he asked if he could close the call. I asked if the firmware on the keyboard would be ok afterwards - he said yes.

This morning I've turned on the PC again and it is STILL asking me to update the keyboard firmware and the attempted upgrade STILL fails with the SHIM and .NET errors.

I'm reluctant to involve online Microsoft support agents again for the obvious reasons...

Any help from the community appreciated.

Thank you!

    I Had the same problem,

    • I downloaded the file R
    • Ran it as an administrator
    • Followed screen instructions
    • .It went through then asked to press any key on the key board to continue
    • Then asked to remove the keyboard batteries and reinsert after 10 seconds
    • Then press any key and it is done
