How do I safely delete old System Restore Points?

The 256GB SSD on my Surface Pro 4 is filling up and since I perceive I can't change out the SSD (or can I?), I am looking for ways to clean up the SSD. Using TreeSize Free utility, I notice that the directory C:\System Volume Information is consuming 100+GB of Space - 40% of my SSD capacity!! I perceive that the directory contains all the restore points since I bought the SurfacePro. I can't imagine that I need any more than the last one especially since I backup SSD images and retain them on my NAS for extended periods.

When I did some research, it appears that there are ways to delete old restore points but before I do that, I want to make sure it is safe to do so. Can it be done safely without the system dieing on me? (Even if it does, I assume I can always restore the most recent image using a boot USB created by my backup)? Thoughts on what method or app is best to do this?

Thanks, Bob

    Hi Bob,

System Restore is nearly obsolete, since large Windows Updates delete our restore points anyway . ..

Go to Control Panel - System

On the left click Advanced System Settings

Click on the System Protection Tab

Select your C Drive and click Configure

Pull the Disk Storage Usage down to a manageable size (10GB), click Apply and OK

You will instantly recover that space on your Hard drive

Also a link to system images for surfaces.

I have a USB drive in my desk with the image on it for those just in case times :)

Yes you can delete restore points without issues... I do this all the time on my surface pro 4.

The way I do it is go to search and type restore point.

Then i click Create a restore point.

    Then configure, then delete.

Also in the configure window you can manage how much space restore points take.

    That should do it.
