Windows 10 Pro on MacBook Air Bootcamp - Intel HD Graphics 6000 driver causes blank screen in applications

I have recently started experiencing issues with Visual Studio 2017 running on Windows 10 Pro through bootcamp on a MacBook Air. Visual Studio is starting with a blank screen and to get it working I have to open the options through key shortcuts and disable hardware acceleration. Uninstalling the graphics driver fixes the problem but when Windows updates the graphics driver the issues occurs again. VS2017 is not the only app affected, I have discovered at least one other, Nord VPN.

I got in touch with Intel and they told me to get in touch with the device manufacturer, which I did, but I was pretty sure they will say it is Windows, so, not our problem. They only told me to get in touch with the OS manufacturer :). From my perspective this is a driver issue, unfortunately I do not know if the same graphics driver was installed before the latest Win 10 major update.

Does anyone have any idea what the fix could be? Disabling the hardware acceleration does not seem right to me.

    Hi,

I was able to pin down the issue after uninstalling every extra driver/application that I have installed after the Windows 10 reset.

The issue seems to be caused by a 3rd party application called Duet Display, DuetSetup-1-5-2-1.exe. This application allows you to use your iPad as a 2nd monitor.

I am pretty sure Duet Display is what is causing the issue as after uninstalling it everything works as expected.

I finally have an answer to this and it is nothing to do with the graphic driver or the Windows 10 April update.

Thanks for your replies and help,

    Gabe.

    Hi Gabriel,

If a driver that is being installed by Windows update is known to cause instability or compatibility issues with your applications, I recommend that you rollback the driver for the meantime. Then download and run the troubleshooter package provided in this support article to temporarily prevent a driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10.

Do check from time to time from your device manufacturer's website if a new driver update is available that may address the compatibility issue that you are encountering with the said driver.

Let me know how it goes.

Have you tried reinstalling the applications that are having issues launching with the new feature update? Also do check with the software developer of these applications if there are new updates or new versions of the applications made available to download and install.

    Do get back to us.

Another update, just had a chat with a colleague on the same hardware but with a Windows 10 Pro N Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134 (mine is Windows 10 Pro Version 1803 Build 17134.112) and this issue is not happening for him.

Also, the graphics driver is the same with one of the drivers I have tested, the latest that Windows updates finds: 20.19.15.4835. I have already tried this driver with no luck. Based on this information, I am lead to believe this is an issue in this version of Windows and I am referring here to the latest major update for Windows 10 Pro (and not the Windows 10 Pro N).

I hope all this information makes sense.

    Thanks,

    Gabe.

    Hi Ferdz Amp,

I have tried 2 previous driver versions but the issue still persists. I believe this has something to do with the latest major Windows 10 update as well, I am on Version 1803, OS Build 17134.112. I would not really want to revert to the previous version though.

If I uninstall the graphics card apps work as normal.

As I have mentioned what actually works is disabling the hardware acceleration from the registry by adding DisableHWAcceleration DWORD key with a value of 1 to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Avalon.Graphics. I believe this might be on the Windows side after all as multiple versions of the graphics card (one from 2017 which I am pretty sure it worked) have the same issue. However, this is just a workaround there is something happening with this particular graphics card Intel HD 6000 and the latest Windows major update. Unfortunately, I do not have this graphic card in any other device to be able to test, so, right now I am just guessing based on what I have seen and tried.

    Thanks.
