How do you disable Skype from running at Startup

Are you using the newer version of Skype that comes with Windows 10 or the classic version?

If its the classic version

Click Tools > Options > General settings > uncheck 'Start Skype when I start Windows.

OR

In the newer modern Skype

Press click your profile picture or press control + i on your keyboard

Click Sign out

press Windows key + R

Type: msconfig

Hit Enter

Select the tab, scroll through and uncheck Skype.

or

Press Windows key + R

Type: shell:startup

Hit Enter

If you Skype in the folder, select it then click Delete

Click your Start Button, type msconfig and hit Enter

When the System Configuration dialog opens, click on the Services Tab

Check the box marked 'Hide Microsoft Services'

In the remaining list look for the Skype app, uncheck it if you find

Click Apply and OK

Otherwise:

Task Manager and indeed Msconfig offer only limited control over Startup items . . .

Click the link below to download a small free utility that does not require installation

When the file downloads, unzip it.

Depending on your system, run Autoruns or Autoruns64 as Administrator

With that utility, you can right click and delete any startup item in Windows

Just be careful not to delete any required process . . .

Dave’s answers are solid, but you can also check this locations to make sure Skype isn’t in there:

Navigate to here:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Or click start and type "shell:startup"

Then here:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

Or click start and type "shell:common startup"

If it’s in there, right click and delete.

Thank you for the quick and highly useful responses. 

I'm using the "new" version. I will try to download the old one and use that. 

This is what I did (a combination of things):

1. I had already deleted the shortcuts in startup but I double checked and nothing except onenote clipper which I use.
2. Check the background app settings.  Woah. I disabled everything. Most I didn't know were even on.
3. Run msconfig. Omg.  It's another hidden interface and black hole. But no mention of skype anywhere. I'm thinking it's tightly integrated into office and there's another setting somewhere to disable it?
4. Get the sysinternals. Muchas gracias!  Another useful, yet carefully hidden-away tool.

I remember having 2 skypes installed, maybe 3? I can't recall now. So Lync is now Skype? I also have Office...  I'm not messing with Office.

I don't see skype at all in control panel btw. It is under the new Settings->Apps.  Side question: why are there 2 control panels and the list of what's installed different on each one. 

I uninstalled skype for business because of some other issue which I don't remember now. I guess it didn't completely uninstall AND my locked-down background app setting are causing skype to crash "the new skype".  

It might be my laptop though - I have also run thinkvantage system update which also has its own update lists and host of issues.

I sincerely appreciate your help.
