Windows 10 Media Creation Tool Stuck At "Checking For Updates"

So basically I just got a new laptop (Dell Lattitude e6520) and it's currently running Windows 7 Professional, but I really want to run Windows 10 on it. So I found online, that it's possible to upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 free using the media creation tool. Can anyone confirm that? Do I need a product key? And also when I upgrade do I get Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro? (since I am currently running Windows 7 Pro)?

But anyways, my main concern is the upgrade time. I used the media creation tool and clicked "Upgrade This PC Now" and it finished downloading Windows and also it verified the download and now it's stuck at "Checking For Updates". It's ran this overnight and I have a 12MB/second download speed so i don't understand why it is this slow. Does anybody know how to solve this and if it is even possible for my computer to upgrade to Windows 10 free?

Computer Specs:

Intel Core i7-2640M Dual-Core (with Hyper-Threading) 3.5GHz Turbo Clock

NVIDIA NVS 4200M 512MB Dedicated Graphics Card

8GB DDR3 RAM Memory

500GB HDD

Windows for home | Windows 10 | Install and upgrade

It's much easier to perform an upgrade using a USB Flash Drive. To create one, make sure a USB flash drive of at least 8GB is inserted on your computer before running the media creation tool. Select Create an installation media, then hit Next. Select your language, architecture, and edition on the next page, and hit Next, then select USB Flash Drive. This option will save a bootable copy of Windows 10 installer file on your USB flash drive that can be used on the spot without the need of internet connection and on any compatible devices.

Once done, you can now perform an upgrade from the USB flash drive.

Before starting the upgrade, make sure to disconnect all peripherals other than your mouse, keyboard and LAN cable and to disable (preferrably uninstall) any third-party antivirus program to prevent it from interfering with the upgrade (this might be the cause why it got stuck during your first attempt to upgrade).

An advanced install will allow you to manage your drive partition before the installation. However, it is not recommended if you want to keep your applications, files, and settings.

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to post back.

I finally got Windows 10 to install via USB. At first, it was a bit laggy but after a few driver updates everything went smoothly. Thanks for the help! :)

I did use installation media and clicked the "Upgrade" option , but it said this method wasn't available and that I needed to use the "Upgrade This PC Now" Option, however there was a second option and it was advanced install, but I'm not sure if i should do that or not because i dont know if it will erase all my documents and programs and stuff. Or should I try using the ISO file and install it on my USB Drive and try that?

    Hi Ethan,

The Windows 10 free upgrade through the Get Windows 10 (GWX) app ended on July 29, 2016. If you are planning to upgrade to Windows 10, you will need to purchase a product key. Have you retried downloading the Windows 10 installer? If retrying doesn't resolve the issue, I suggest proceeding with creating an installation media instead of using Upgrade this PC now option.

If you would like me to provide additional advice, simply respond to this thread. I will get notified and I’ll reply to you as soon as I can.
