Canon IS-12 Scanner Software for WINDOWS 10

If you don't have the Canon Driver Disk, locate the Canon Scanner SOFTWARE program for the IS-12 on the internet.  Choose the WINXP (Pro) version.  If a choice of service pack is allowed, choose service pack 3.  This program is:-

  ISScan_v350.exe

This program really does not run in WIN10 (or WIN 7, 8, or 8.1); however, it will run nicely in WINXP (Pro).

[This technique has been used on a machine using XPPRO, but it should work with a machine using WINXP.]

Now using a WINXP (Pro) machine run "ISScan_v350.exe" and go ahead and install the software.  It doesn't matter if the printer is connected to the XP machine.  Nor does it matter that you will never use the software on the XP machine (you can uninstall later if you want).

After the software has installed, locate the folder "ISScan_v350."  This should be located in the root directory under "temp."  I.e., c:\temp\ISScan_v350

Copy the folder to your WIN10 machine on the desktop (for convinence or any location that you may choose).  There are three subfolders in "ISScan_v350" being: Disk 1, Disk 2, and Disk 3.

Open the subfolder Disk 1 and look for "Setup.exe"  There are two ways to go from here.

 A) Right Click on setup.exe and choose 'Compatibility Troubleshoot.'  Run the troubleshooter and allow it to select to run this program in WINXP-Service Pack mode.

(Note the troubleshooter will choose this mode and ask you to confirm the choice.)

 B) Right Click on setup.exe and choose 'Properties.'  Under the compatibily tab, manually select to run the program in WINXP-Service Pack 3 mode.

Run "Setup.exe" in WINXP-Service Pack 3 mode and choose BOTH the 'Twain Driver' and 'ISScan Program' (default).  This will install the required ISScan Programs to your WIN10 machine in "c:\Program Files\Canon."  However, the required program "ISPlus.exe" will not show up anywhere.

Now we have to locate the required ISScan Program File(s) and set them to run in WINXP-Service Pack 3 mode.

Go to "c:\Program Files\Canon\IS Scan" and locate the programs "CANOIT32.EXE" and "ISPlus.exe."  These two programs must be set to run in WINXP-Service Pack 3 mode.  This can be done using the same technique that you used for the original 'Setup.exe' program [see A) or B) above].

Now we need to place a Shortcut Icon on the desktop to be able to run "ISPlus.exe."  This is simple, in the 'Canon\IS Scan' Folder right click on "ISPlus.exe" and choose "Send To - Desktop (Create shortcut)".  This will place the 'ISPlus Shortcut' Icon on the desk top - you're done.  It is not necessary to have a shorcut to the other program "CANOIT32.exe."  Enjoy your fully functional Canon BJC-55 printer/scanner.

NOTE THIS TECHNIQUE SHOULD WORK WITH ALL CANON PRINTERS THAT ORIGINALLY COULD UTILIZE THE IS-12 SCANNER CARTRIDGE.

One further note - Canon Printer Drivers are NOT required as these are actually in the WIN10 OS and will self load!

    Hi Michael,

You should be able to find the drivers at >>  http://canon.driversdown.com/Canon-driver-list/s\_470\_1.shtml  <<.

    Dan,

Quick reply to your latest posts . . .

Print Head - no I don't do very much printing, I just left the print head unused for several years and could NOT get it to work.  So I bought some more print heads only.  I have found that if you place the "plastic protector" tape, that comes with a new head, back over the head and place the head (and ink cartridge) in an air tight container, it will last for several years between uses.

Yes, I am aware of the Infrared Control Panel in WIN10.  When I try to print over IrDA the "printer control panel" indicates that WIN10 is sending data to the printer, but after about a minute the indication goes away and nothing happens at the printer.  The IrDA panel does indicate that it is communication with the printer (be it my Canon or Citizen).  Thus, I think WIN10 is only set up for file data transfer over the IrDA.  I remember reading on some Microsoft Post that a chap had "finally got IrDA working with his printer, unfortunately he never said how he did it.  So I guess there is a way!

Now, my problem might be in the drivers for my IrDA/USB device which is an old SigmaTel USB-IrDA Adapter.  The drivers are actually available on the Microsoft Drivers Web Site which says they are valid for WIN10.  I think if I could figure out how to force these drivers to work in WIN7 mode, I might make them work with my printers.  I just can't seem to make the drivers load in WIN7 mode.  Frankly, I gave up as I rarely use the printers and when I do I can make do with the USB to DB25 cables.  (One less cable would be nice.)

The Polar HR device is a data transfer device and I see from their web site that their IrDA/USB adapter will work with certain Polar devices on WIN10.  Again, I think this device will work because the machine is only transferring data without handshakes!

    All the best,

    Charles

PS - FYI, I've been messing with computers since I cut my teeth on a Burroughs/ElectroData 205 Main Frame (vacuum tubes and drum memory) when I was the maintenance engineer in Grad School back in 1965.  I'm old and tired!

I so pleased that you were able to use my post.  So far I have not refilled any Canon Cartridges as I have been able to find an ample supply on Amazon (cartridges and the actual printhead:  I've found that the printhead tends to plug and  become unusable after a time and no amount of cleaning will fix it).

As regards connection to Windows 10 machines.  My Canon Bubble Jet is a BJC-55 which came with a USB port and an IrDA port; thus, I had no problem using a USB cable to both print and scan.  I do have a legacy Citizen PN60 which only comes with a DB25 IEEE-1284 (parallel) port.  My Windows 10 machine will happily print to it using an HDE 3FT USB to DB25 adapter cable.  (Available for roughly US$7.00 from Amazon -  see:

HDE 3 FT USB to DB25 IEEE-1284 Parallel Printer Adapter Cable For Laptop Desktop PC)

IrDA is another matter.  I have a Windows 7 machine.  In WIN7 my old IrDA/USB adapter (which you can't seem to buy any more) will allow my BJC-55 and the IrDA version of the Citizen PN60i to print over IrDA - no problem.  I have not tried to scan through the BJC-55.

NOW - I have gone blue in the face trying to make IrDA work in Windows 10.  (I've even asked Microsoft to look into this, but all I got from them is a 'dial tone.'  I note that some people have made IrDA work on WIN10, but so far NOT FOR PRINTERS.

I placed a post on how to find printer drivers for the legacy Citizen PN60 series that will work in WIN7, 8, and 10.

    I hope this helps

Many thanks for this detailed tutorial!  Although a bit slow, the BJC-50 is still a great option for a mobile setup, and it even has a lithium ion battery (mine still works great). For the cartridges, I've been refilling them myself since they're somewhat hard to find, which is pretty easy after you've already done it once.

What have you been using to connect to your Windows 10 PC with - a parallel to USB adapter cable? I assume the scanner worked OK using that?

I'd really like to get IRDA working on a modern laptop so I could go sans cables and power adapter while on the road. I have an old Sony Vaio that connects over IRDA great, but it's too dated to use for much.

Have you tried using an IRDA 1.0 USB adapter yet? I've heard tale about some people getting them to work.

    Thanks again!
