Can't connect Microsoft 'Designer Mouse'

I just bought a Microsoft 'Designer Mouse', which I'd like to use with my Windows 10 Professional laptop. Initially it paired with my PC straight away, but after about an hour it abruptly stopped working. It was still listed as a Bluetooth device, but Windows said Bluetooth was not running, which was bizarre.

I rebooted my laptop but the mouse still wouldn't work, so I removed it from Bluetooth devices and tried to re-pair. Windows could see it, but failed to pair, repporting, "Try connecting your device again."

In Device Manager I selected each item listed under Bluetooth and tried updating its driver - one of them ("Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)") updated, but after rebooting I still can't pair the mouse, I still get the message about connecting again.

Before I return the mouse to the shop (and switch, like the rest of my office, to a Mac!) is there anything I can try to get it to work?

I found a solution that worked for our machines. Windows 10 64 bit.  I downloaded the Intel Wireless Bluetooth driver version 20.60.0 from the Intel website (https://www.intel.com.au/content/www/au/en/support/articles/000005489/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html).

Prior to installing this driver, the Designer Mouse would either not be detected at all, or if detected would not connect.

I had to restart the machine after installing the driver before it would work.

I tried many of the suggestions in this and other threads. Nothing worked. But this worked for me. It's been a frustrating experience. It appears to me that Windows Updates broke it. So, I would not be surprised if I have to reinstall the driver in the future if I get particular Windows Updates.

I feel sure this will help someone.

This advice only applicable for those with the appropriate Intel models (listed at the above URL).

    Hi Toby,

It is possible that an outdated driver is causing this connectivity concern. For us to better assist you, we'd like to know the following details:

    1. Did you made a recent update?
    2. Which version of Windows 10 are you currently using? To see which version of Windows 10 is installed on your PC, click on the Startbutton and then select Settings. In Settings, select SystemAbout.
    3. Were there any changes made on your laptop prior to the issue?
    4. Have you tried using your mouse to other computers or laptop? Does it exhibit the same error?

If you are running the latest Windows 10 version 1709, we suggest that you follow the steps below as initial troubleshooting:

    Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter

    1. Select the Start button, then select SettingsUpdate & securityTroubleshoot.
    2. Under Find and fix other problems, select Bluetooth > Run the troubleshooter.

In case that the automatic troubleshooter didn't fix the issue, you can proceed with the steps provided in the Fix Bluetooth problems in Windows 10: FAQ article. Follow the steps under

I have faced the same problem and in order to solve that ,you have to do the following:

    • Make sure that the Bluetooth connector’s version is Bluetooth 4.0 because this mouse works only with Bluetooth 4.0 and it is showed that on the package.

-Try to install that latest Bluetooth drive which supported by Microsoft ,Third party drivers or Apps will not detect the device.

-In case your built-in Bluetooth connector does not support Bluetooth 4.0 , you can buy Bluetooth adaptor that supports Bluetooth 4.0 and the driver also should be supported by Microsoft.

    • Incase you’ve bought Bluetooth adaptor 4.0 then you have to disable the built-in Bluetooth connector sothat .

    I hope that may help

Thanks for getting back to me, my responses inline:

"Did you made a recent update?"

    No

"Which version of Windows 10 are you currently using? To see which version of Windows 10 is installed on your PC, click on the Startbutton and then select Settings. In Settings, select SystemAbout."

    1709

"Were there any changes made on your laptop prior to the issue?"

    No

"Have you tried using your mouse to other computers or laptop? Does it exhibit the same error?"

No, I don't currently have access to another I can test with

I have run the Bluetooth troubleshooter as you suggested - each time I do it it says a problem was found and fixed, "Check Bluetooth radio status", however, I'm still unable to pair the mouse again.
