I'm trying to put bitlocker on an external usb hard drive, as well as a USB drive. Neither will work

I can go through the dialogue to to setup a password, get the recovery key, do the full disk encryption, and set it as a portable drive.

The encryption then tries to start, but after a few seconds I get

A problem occurred during bitlocker setup you may need to restart bitlocker setup to continue. Error code: 0x80072f9a

Haven't found much online for that error code.

I've rebooted.

Bitlocker on win 10 works fine, so not sure where to go from here.

Since this is the first thing that comes up in a search on the internet,

I was able to fix it by connecting to the corporate network that my computer was managed by and then trying to run Bitlocker again.

    Technical answer:

The GPO (Choose how BitLocker-protected <drive type> drives can be recovered -> Do not enable BitLocker until recovery information is stored to AD DS for <drive type>) is set to "Enabled".

This forces a connection to a domain controller to write the recovery info to it before it is allowed to be enabled.

    Thanks!

    Hi hsolo,

Device encryption helps protect your data by encrypting it. Bitlocker is usually used in a business environment which is supported by TechNet. The moderators and users on TechNet are very knowledgeable and I suggest you post your question there.

    Regards.
