Device Manager in Windows 10

My laptop did a windows 10 update yesterday. I need to open device manager to adjust a setting so I can use wifi, however, device manager will not load. I have tried pressing the windows logo key and R and typing the code to open it, I've also opened Control Panel and clicked the thumbnail for it. It takes 7 seven minutes for an error message to pop up to say that it didn't load in a 'timely fashion' then it has given up. How can I fix this? Also is there another way I can connect to wifi?

    Hi Magic,

Click the Start button, then choose Settings .

Select Update & security > Recovery.

Under Advanced startup select Restart now.

After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options - choose safe mode with networking, and see if you can get into the device manager.

Other ways of connecting to wireless:

Start - Settings - Network & Internet - WiFi - see if you can connect to networks.

If no, click start and type “control panel” and open it. Launch Network and sharing center. On the left, you should “change adapter settings” - in there you should see your wireless adapter, if it’s disabled, right click and enable it. This should help.

    Let me know!

In your advice for getting into the device manager: the last step, I could not find. I could not find a "networking" or "safe mode" anything. I did end up clicking a "system repair startup" and it restarted my computer again. I didn't think it did anything, so I was going to try you advice for connecting to wifi, however, it had fixed itself with the last restart.

Now I can open the device manager, which was the real question I originally posted and I can connect to wifi. I obviously don't know if your second advice for connecting to wifi would have worked if the other problem had not been resolved, but your advice was much appreciated.

Thank you very much for your help.

This maybe an issue with a system file being corrupt.

You can try a couple things.

Right click your start button and select Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt.

In Command prompt type sfc /scannow and press enter.

    Restart the computer.

If that doesn't work then try this,

Right click your start button and select Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt.

In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands.

Press Enter key after each command:

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Important: When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions.

To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.

    Restart your computer.

The other way you can try to get to wifi is go to start - settings - network & internet - change adapter options

That will get you to your network cards where you can right click them and enable and disable them etc.
