Frankly, I'm getting tired of having to go in every few minutes and turn off Cortana and the 8-14 Edge background iterations that seem to appear out of thin area, even after I shut each down individually. I'd also appreciate a little more control over Defender, like the ability to completely deactivate it. I use my own security protocols and if I get hacked then it is my own fault. I am an adult and don't need another mother.
Search without Cortana
I recently required a re-install of the most current version of Windows 10. Now, I'm unable to use the search bar without activating Cortana, and before today, that functionality was available to me. I really don't need to have Cortana's help in searching my PC or on the internet. I just want to type and search.
Please tell me this can be corrected without having to reinstall again. There must be a way!
Thanks.

2018-09-02T12:13:10+00:00 Thanks for your replies.
I tried the "hide method" , which apparently is my only option. It does not take Cortana (I can't believe I'm actually using "its" name) completely out of the picture, which is how I had it a couple of hours prior to my original post. The new Windows install resurrected it! As far as using the file search method that defeats the purpose of have the "Search Box", but thanks. I'm more in line with HMRHED_BLUE's views. From now on when Windows asks me how it can be improved, my first response is going to be allow me to get rid of Cortana!

2018-08-31T23:58:30+00:00 Right click the Taskbar. In the popup you will see Cortana or Search. Hover over it and in the pop out click on Hidden, or Search bar.
I use Hidden and I can search by hitting the Windows key ans then type what I want to search for. This does not clutter up my taskbar with a box.

What if you go to File Explorer and use the search box at the top right corner?:
