What's defragment consolidation on Windows 10?

Put simply, the consolidation phase takes longer than it would to disassemble my laptop. Not that I've tried.

Someone TELL ME what this means, and no links. They have NEVER helped me.

Thanks.

    Hi Fahmid

Initially defragmentation will put all the pieces of files beside each other on your hard drive

The Consolidation phase is when those files are then moved around on your hard drive to make the empty parts of your hard drive as big as possible, by packing the defragmented files tightly together - consolidating the free space ready for new files to be written to your hard drive

If Norton defragmenter is installed it may interfere built-it defragmenter normal running unfortunately.

Take a look a' that. I was on this stage for about 4 or 5 hours. Talk of battery life depreciating.

If defragmenting is finished, there cannot be any stage running. Or do you mean you are using third-party defragmenter too?

I see what you mean, but I always use Microsoft's Disk Optimiser.

Norton helps me out, but only when fragmentation goes mental, as in, over 10%.

But on my own, after analysis and, say, a 100% defragmented' label, a second stage pops up, saying 0% consolidated.

    For about an hour.

    Yep, I timed that.

My life just went from boring to annoyed, in terms of defrag.

    Hi,

depending of fragmentation of files on your hard drive consolidation phase may require many thousands or read-write operations and this may take significant time.
