DVD drive won't burn DVDs in Windows 10

PC is on Windows 10 1803 64 bit - it has an inbuilt DVD drive and I've recently bought an external USB DVD drive.  The update to 1803 build took several attempts this summer.

The new external drive is recognised by Windows, but no discs (e.g. commercial music CDs, or new Maxell blank DVDs)  are recognised by it when inserted.

With the inbuilt drive, which used to work, the burn software either reports an error in the burn process or apparently goes through the process, but does not burn anything.  The drive plays a commercial music CD.

Both drives report as OK in the Device Manager.  I've tried updating the drivers, uninstalling and re-booting the drives, deleting entries under IDE and deleting an upperlimit in the registry.

    Hi to all

I had the same problem after my update on Windows 10 ver 1803 and my dvd burner gave me problem and caused several disk to be discarded. And previously I bought a new dvd burner not knowing this was the problem of the driver.

I had a great computer man who once ran a computer shop. So after many tries, I tracked back on what this man did when I was on XP and older versions.

    What I did was :

go to the device manager (press microsoft button and x... then look for device manager)

then locate the dvd/cd rom drives.

    I just uninstall the driver.

then restart your computer and it will reinstall the drivers again.

    Mine is working perfectly now.

    Peter

Hi David. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

    First try the steps here:

    https://www.lifewire.com/copy-music-from-cds-wi...

    https://www.apowersoft.com/burn-cd-windows-10.html

    https://www.easytechguides.com/burn-a-cd-or-dvd...

    To troubleshoot see these:

    https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-change-burn-spe...

    https://www.groovypost.com/howto/fix-dvd-cd-dri...

Did the DVD drive work in that PC before? If so this might have been caused by Windows Update. Did you receive Windows Updates recently? Check at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Installed Update History. You can try uninstalling any affecting Updates there.

You can also try to System Restore to a point before this happened: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

See if the problem returns with the Update reinstalling and if so uninstall it and block it using the Hide Updates tool: https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent...

To attempt to repair this, go to Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button. Under DVD Device, click on Driver tab, see if Roll Back is available. If not choose Uninstall, restart PC to reinstall the driver.

Next right click Start button to open Disk Management, scroll down to find the DVD drive. Does it have a driver letter? If not right click to issue a drive letter so it shows up in File Explorer, save and exit.

Run Hardware troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot

If nothing else helps then run a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This solves many problems and will also bring it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

FYI there is no DVD player in Windows 10, they want you to buy one from the store. There are better free options here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2953724/windows/...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Thanks Greg.

The built-in drive won't perform a CD rip in WMP, but it will still play.

No change on the new USB DVD drive.

I appear to be all up to date so far as Intel are concerned. As part of installing the Windows 10 update, I ensured that my display drivers and chipset drivers were up to date.

    I uninstalled KB4230204 and re-started.  KB 4343669 doesn't offer an uninstall option.

Those are the only two items shown as Updates for Microsoft Windows.

Settings/About still reports I'm still on build 1803, installed 13 August, the day before KB4230204 was installed.
