Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006 on Windows 10

I have had Digital Image Suite 2006 working on Windows 10 since 10 was released and as of yesterday (February 14, 2018) it will not re-install. The lasted update "crashed" my system and after many hours of reloading everything, I can not install Image Suite 2006.

Can anyone explain to me as to why this update would strip all the programs used most often are not compatibly to run on the new updated Windows 10? It's 32 bit (Image Suite) and it has always worked on 64bit Windows, but not anymore.

Nobody seams to give me a straight answer, redirects and solutions to extra software I do not need.

This update has caused more problems than what good it has prior

I agree this is a shame as I still use DIS 2006 on a regular basis.  However the program is 12+ years old so I've always considered that compatibility as Windows 10 progresses was a "borrowed time" thing at best.  DIS 2006 also has a few other issues (opening image files beyond about 2GB, resolutions restrictions, and a few quirks with 4K displays) that reflect how far PC's have come in the last decade that it is hard to fault to program for as well.  It's old.

The good news is that it is ONLY the installer that fails on Builds past 1703 as it can no longer find the IE6 32 bit "pieces". Once the application is installed it continues to work fine on all the release builds of Windows 10 I've used so far (including the just-released "Spring Creators Update"  Build 1803).

A few approaches I've successfully used to keep my access to DIS 2006:

Keep an Install of Build 1703 handy so if you do have to reinstall everything on your system, you can use that build, install DIS 2006, and then let Windows Update bring you current on new builds of Windows 10 (which is what I've done the last 2 times I had to wipe-and-rebuild the O/S).

Do an install of Build 1703, install DIS 2006 and any other apps that still look for 32bit IE pieces (I've run across a few that I really didn't care about but your mileage may vary.  Do the upgrade to the most current version of Windows and them make a disk image of that "clean" build in case you need to do a future restore.  This is my preferred method as I do often test software on my system and occasionally have to restore to baseline.

Create a VM of Windows 7 and install DIS 2006 on it (as well as any other legacy apps you still want access to).

Of course, one could always go to 3D Paint.... 😜

Digital Image Suite 2006 WILL install and run under Windows 10, regardless of whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit installed.  A 'workaround trick' needs to be used, and it's worth doing because to this day DIS 2006 is about the best photo touchup software tool a layman casual photographer could use!

    Here's how to do it:

    1.  Pop the installation disk in the drive and start the install.

    2.  To ensure you get time to complete a later step, start up a few other applications as well.

    3.  Soon the DIS 2006 installer will pop up an error message indicating that Internet Explorer 6 cannot be installed on the machine.  Click on "OK" when this box appears.

    4.  Next a second error box will pop up, indicating that the Internet Explorer 6 installation could not be completed.  DO NOT CLICK ON THIS BOX at this point!

    1. Click on the Start button and locate your user account icon on the Start menu.  (It's the little icon at top of the entries in the left column).  Right-click on this icon and select "Sign Out".

    6.  Blue confirmation screen will now appear, informing you that Windows is closing apps and signing out.  You should have several programs listed, and the DIS 2006 installer should be at (or near) top of the list.

    7.  Wait a second or two, and then click on "Cancel" for this screen.  BEFORE Windows closes the DIS 2006 installer!

    8.  Now go back to that second error dialogue box, and click on "OK".  The Digital Image suite installation will now complete successfully, and the DIS installation will work perfectly to give you a fully working editor.  (The Photo Gallery portion of the software suite will not be available, but I'd highly doubt that anyone would want that nowadays anyway.)

This question has been asked numerous times in MS Community threads, and to date I've not seen a correct answer posted to it.  DIS 2006 does NOT really need IE6 to be present in order for its image editing functionality to work!

I have the same issue.  Unfortunately I don't have a build.

by the way  Microsoft Digital image suite 10 is far far superior  3D Paint.

If you had used Digital image suite, you know.

Thanks for your input.  Although I wont pretend to understand completely.   (install build?)  Do you mean an older windows build?  Ill have to wrap my head around doing a virtual Machine setup.

Given that I had to wipe and reinstall, I haven't an old install.
