Transfering Windows 7 to new PC

Hi Guys

I'm looking for some information regarding the best method fro transferring my Windows 7 OS to a whole new PC?

My current PC is beginning to overheat and shutdown amongst other things and I'd like to transfer my current Windows platform along with all the current software to a brand new custom PC.

This new PC will comprise of a new motherboard and Thread Ripper CPU to start with and possibly a U2 SSD to hold the OS instead of the current SATA hard disk (I've heard they are faster than standard disks!)

My Idea is to boot from my current OS HD fitted into the new PC then copy/move everything over to the new U2 SSD, then use the old OS HD to add to my storage disks capacity. Possibly use some backup imaging software?

  1. I'm guessing Windows will have an issue with all the new hardware with regards to drivers and licences.
  2. As will some of my currently installed software. I'd prefer not to re-install everything as it's took some time to get it all working how I like it.

Any useful information would be appreciated

Did your current computer come with Windows pre-installed?  If so, you can not legally move the installation to another computer.

If you have a retail-licensed copy of Windows 7, then you legally can move the installation to a different computer.

    For technical instructions, see https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/135077-windows-7-installation-transfer-new-computer.html

In addition to the method described a the SevenForums link, some backup software has the ability to restore a system image to new hardware.  The one with which I'm familiar is Acronis True Image, which is a commercial product (i.e., not free); some of the free imaging software products may have this capability as well.  For Acronis, see https://kb.acronis.com/ati2018/aur

    FYI:

PC Mover Express Laplink's arrangement with Microsoft was originally done for XP to 7.

I first posted about it here in 2014 at the end of XP Support

Not certain what your question is exactly, but I will add to what Lem and Bill have already told you.

Windows 7 has a Windows Easy Transfer wizard built-in.  It is a really excellent piece of software.  It will transfer most data and settings from old to new.  NOT programs.  You run it on the old and save the large file it creates on an external drive.  Then run it again on the new to complete the transfer.

    Thanks Len

I wasn't aware Laplink were still on the go?

I'll give all these suggestions a go, if all else fails I can always do a clean install
