Strange problem with system folders

Hello to everybody,

I have already asked for help to solve a bizarre problem in my computer. A very kind member of the community has tried to do his best, but the problem is still there. I wonder if someone  else can offer me a solution.

The matter is that for unknown reasons, due probably to a bad manipulation which I committed involuntarily, the folder "Downloads" ended up to be located in my "Pictures" folder and the name of the folder "Pictures" has disappeared from  the system folders list.

I think it's better to show you a screenshot.

I have already tried to change the value in the registry (User Shell folders), as I had told to do, in this forum, but things got even worse, because I get a message of error saying that the folder "Downloads" don't exist, so I cannot make a path to it.

Any solution to suggest to me?

Thank you in advance

    Hello again!

I had some problem in finding

    Command Prompt

Then I realised that there was instead

    Windows Power Shell (Admin)

I found the way to go back to Command Prompt and it worked

“For those who prefer to use Command Prompt, you can opt out of the WIN + X change by opening Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, and turning ‘Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the Start button or press Windows key+X’ to Off.”

    and it worked.

Then I tried to do what you suggested to me, but I could run the commands only one at a time. So I repeated the operation three times, every one for each command.

But then I was told that there was nothing corrupted and all was fine. Now I try to restart the PC and then I'll tell you if anything has changed. Thanks

    Try this

    create a system restore point

All your original folders are located here

    C:\Users*YOUR USER NAME*

I would turn OFF Onedrive too

Now go into these folders and UNPIN them all from quick access

Now open file explorer options>>View tab

Set these settings this way and apply to folders

    Now on your desktop

    look for the DESKTOP.INI file

    DELETE the DESKTOP.INI file

Now set the settings back this way and apply to folders

    Restart PC

If all is good, empty recycle bin

If you start changing the location settings as mentioned. Beware, as you will probably create a bigger mess than you already have. You can also make these changes in the registry.

I forgot to tell you that I could stay happily without "Downloads" folder, but I'd like at least to change the name of  the two folders which now are called Downloads, while they are actually my Pictures folder.

Hello Jordan, thank you for your answer.

Unfortunately, as you can see from the screenshot below, there is a "Downloads" folder, but inside it there are all the subfolders and files of my "Pictures" folder, because it has actually  merged in it, so it's called "Downloads" but it's "Pictures". If I move all my pictures somewhere else, the path from the empty "Downloads" folder will lead always to my *Pictures" folder, simply it will appear like an empty folder.

I hope I could explain myself. Sorry for being confusing. English is not my mother tongue.

    hi there,

To resolve this issue try these steps

Navigate to : C:\Users%username% (replace %username% with yours)

see if you have any download folders there, if you do, open them up and move any files to a seperate location.

    Then delete them.

If you dont have them, great!

Then create a new folder called Downloads.

Then if you have made any changes to the registry key you mentioned, now you it should be able to find the downloads folder.

Then right click on the downloads folder and select, pin to quick access and it should reappear in the origional locations.

Now the next thing you may need to do is go within your web browser and repoint the downloads location however it should continue to work.

let me know how you get on!
