volume button on taskbar not responsive

copied this from another poster...I have exact same issue.

Just a basic laptop user and don't have the techy knowledge to uninstall and reinstall numerous updates/programs etc, just want my easy volume icon working again

Microsoft if its an update can this be updated on your end to work again???

I noticed earlier today that the volume icon on the taskbar, no longer has any functionality. it does not respond to left or right clicks. hovering over the icon will display current volume level but that's it. as part of the troubleshooting, I ran the audio troubleshooter. the troubleshooter said the audio service was not responding to requests, and then it removed my audio device from device manager and asked me to restart. after restart, the audio device was back, but the volume icon still did not work. I ran the audio troubleshooter two more times. all three time it did the same three things. next I ran DISM too see if it was a windows corruption issue. DISM gave me the all clear. As did SFC and CHKDSK. finally I uninstalled the latest update. at this point the volume icon started working again. I then had windows update reinstall the update, and the volume icon stopped working again. the root cause of this issue seems to be the kb4020102 update. is there anyway to work around this issue and still have the update installed?

Sound still works, but I am unable to adjust sound settings

I had the same issue. The most common solution did not work for me. The following did: Open your Task Manager. Scroll down to Windows Explorer and right-click on it. Click on restart. Hope this anyone else.

Ditto for me.  So simple, I would have never discovered it on my own.  Thanks!

    Hi Hud316,

If you have already run the audio troubleshooter and performed a SFC and DISM scan, and the issue persists, it's possible that you may have missing or corrupt driver for your audio controller.

Try reinstalling the driver: Open Device Manager, right-click (or tap and hold) the name of the device (audio), and select Uninstall. Restart your PC and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

If the issue persists, check if an update for the audio driver is available. Here's how:

    1. Select the Start  button, typeDevice Manager, and select it from the list of results.
    2. Expand one of the categories to find the name of your device, then right-click (or tap and hold) it, and select Update Driver.
    3. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
    4. If Windows doesn't find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.

Let me know how it goes.
