Audio Drivers

Since the Windows 10 October update my audio driver for RealTek High Definition Audio no longer functions correctly.  In particular when I play a game, there is NO sound.  I can play video files with sound and I can watch YouTube with sound, but there is no sound when I  play a game.  I've called my computer manufacturer ASUS and they walked me through several procedures to "reset" my drivers and correct the issue and finally  determined that there is a software glitch due to the Win 10 update that was auto downloaded to my computer.

How/When is Microsoft going to resolve this?

    Hi CawleyV.

Indeed, it is not nice to be without sound.

Issue is related to the drivers.

If your device has Intel drivers that it should be updated from this source: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28240...

    Hello CawleyV

If this was caused by Windows Updates then you can check which were installed at Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update under Installed Updates, then uninstall them from the link there, and hide with the Hide Updates tool downloaded from here:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

Then restart the computer and test the sound if it does not work, do the following

1-Right-click on the Windows icon; then select Control Panel.

    2-Click Hardware and Sound.

3-Under Sound, select Manage audio devices; then select Audio Device.

    4-Right-click unistall device

    5-Select OK.

6-Check that there is no audio device installed.

    7-Then restart the computer

Now we are going to install the asus driver

1-Right-click on the Windows icon; then select Control Panel.

    2-Click Hardware and Sound.

3-Under Sound, select Manage audio devices; then select Audio Device.

    4-Right-click update driver

5-Select browse my computer then chose your asus driver folder

6-When the computer finishes installing the driver, restart it.

Let us know if the above instructions help.

    Regards

    Hi Mark.

    I appreciate your feedback.

Actually the issue is on April's 1803 build update only, so I needed to downgrade it to 1709 build where everything's running smoothly. I won't got further to the Oct. update since it has been reported major audio issues among others.

Microsoft needs to stop to send fully untested patches to their customers community right away since Major Windows patches has become an unnecessary pain in the neck for most users these days.

We're not having confidence anymore unfortunately, so I refuse to get another untested failed major update from MS.

    Hi CawleyV.

Try installing the audio driver for your motherboard. See your computer's brand and find the manufacturer's page, then download the driver and install it.

Let me know if I can help you further!

    Gscualo,

Thanks for the feedback (and thanks to everyone else who responded to my query).

I see that I am going to take a more aggressive stance against auto-updating.  This is probably the 3rd time that I have had to contend with an update disrupting the functionality of my system.  In my case it's audio issues, but it seems that it can be different issues on different systems.

Freddys' suggested a download from MS that blocks the version 1803 October, 2018 cumulative updates.  As a matter of fact I went ahead and reset my computer to factory settings and the audio issue IS now resolved (so I will have to reapply Freddys' recommendation).

I hate the idea that now I can anticipate future disruptions and will have to rely upon heavy handed tactics like factory settings resets in order to keep my computer working in spite of MS.  This bodes very badly and I believe it may set up unforeseen consequences.  Shame.
