White Lined Border around Desktop Icon after I click on it

Hi! I am using "Windows 10 Pro", and I have this issue for a long time:

  • When I am on the Desktop I see all the icons like this:
  • Than I clink on an Icon, so I highlight that, it's OK:
  • Than I sideclick on the Desktop to unmark the icons, and that white border still remains:

I tried to restart the Windows Explorer, I tried to set the icon size. Nothing helped. If I refresh the desktop, with key F5, or right-click / Refresh, it disappears, but the next time I highlight an icon, it is there again.

I know it is not normal, because there are PCs in my worksplace with the same operating system withhout this issue. It is very annoying. Is there any soulution for this, or do I have to refresh my desktop in every time?

Thank you for the answers!

I tested this on mine & it worked.

Click on the picture to see it bigger.

After unchecking the box & clicking Apply & OK, I went to my desktop & refreshed it & clicked around on various icons.

    The white border was gone.

    Hi Otto,

I’ve seen it reported over the years from time to time, and no real fix that I could find. Some people have better luck than others with restarting explorer, or resizing the icons as you mentioned (have you tried resizing to small, then back to medium) same deal?

What version of Win 10 are you running, 1803, 1809?

Click start - Settings - Updates and Security - Windows Updates - Let’s see if there are any pending updates that can be installed. If so, install those and we’ll go from there.

Also, I wonder if it’s profile specific. If you were to make another user account and log in could you check if it happens?

Let me know, and we’ll try to figure this out!
