Sound on Earphones Suddenly Stopped Working

My device;

I have a Windows 10 PC (an Asus ROG Strix Scar II GL504M).

What happened;

I was listening to music on YouTube with my earphones. I disconnected them for a minute to listen to something on my phone and when I reconnect, I could no longer hear any sound from them whatsoever (from any app). The laptop speakers work perfectly fine as they always have.

What happens when I plug in my earphones;

The prompt appears immediately asking me what kind of audio device it is; I can choose headset, microphone or headphone but none of those options work. The microphone on the earphones work, I tested this and they work as they should - it's just the sound (I tried recording myself on the inbuilt recorder and playing it out loud without the earphones plugged in, it records from the earphone mic).

What I've tried (to no success);

Restarting the laptop.

Reinstalling the drivers and restarting.

Setting the earphones as the default device in the audio manager (this did not work because they didn't even show up there).

Other headphones - they do not work either (and these earphones work perfectly fine on my phone).

Searching for solutions online - every online forum mentions the things I've already tried above and none of them have worked.

Any help would be amazing!

    So from what ive seen, it looks like your jack may has suffered from some damage somehow , but before we go into that lets try this one more time and hope that isnt the case. -

    1. Go to "Control Panel".
    2. Click on "Sound".
    3. Make sure you are on the "Playback" tab.
    4. Click on the device you are trying to fix.
    5. Now click the "Configure" button and follow the prompts. (Be sure you also click the "Test" button.)
    6. Once that is complete, click the "Properties" button.
    7. When you are done with your changes, in "Properties", click "Apply" and then "OK".
    8. Then click "OK", again, on the main "Sound window".

    If not you may need to try something like this: https://www.amazon.com/LZYCO-External-connector...

    Hi Charya. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

    Right click Volume icon in System Tray at right end of task bar, Open Sound Settings, in dropdown menu at top make sure Headphones are selected.

    If not choose Troubleshoot.

    Also try the Hardware Troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

    Go to the Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, choose Sound controller device, on Driver tab choose Roll back or Uninstall, restart PC using keyboard to Ctrl Alt Del, on blue screen tab to Power Icon in bottom right, press Enter, arrow down to Restart, press Enter to restart to reinstall the driver.

    Update the Sound driver from the PC or Device maker's Support downloads web page. While there also check that the Chipset, BIOS, Display, USB, Network and all other drivers are the most current.

    If this was caused by Windows Update(s) then you can check which were installed at Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update under Installed Updates, then uninstall them from the link there, and hide with the Hide Updates tool downloaded from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

    You can also use System Restore to get before the problem began, then check for Updates with the Hide Update tool and hide them: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

    Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

    Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    If nothing else helps you can run a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows in about an hour while saving your files, apps and most settings, solves many problems while also bringing it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

    But remember that in Windows 10 everything depends upon the quality of the install, and Factory or Upgrade installs are inferior installs which most enthusiasts won't even run because they'd expect endless issues. Consider now or later doing the Clean Install in this link which compiles the best possible install that will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

    There is also an automated Fresh Start that reinstalls WIndows while shedding corrupting factory bloatware, saves your files, but doesn't clear the drive to get it cleanest: https://www.howtogeek.com/265054/how-to-easily-...

    I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Hi Greg.

    I tried reinstalling the drivers again and now, my speakers are producing a constant static noise (laptop speakers, earphones still don't work) that won't go away even if I mute the system sounds. Looks like it got much worse.

    Please help!

    EDIT: Uninstalling and then restarting again fixed the static issue but the earphones still don't work. On top of this, the prompt no longer appears to ask what type of audio device I'm using when I plug them in.

    Restarting again seems to have done something. The prompt appears now and I can now see the device on the Playback tab of the sound settings. I can also select it in the Open Sound Settings menu. That said, I still can't hear through my earphones.

    I can't do that because it doesn't show up in the Playback Tab. I'm unsure if it's damage to the jack because this laptop is quite new and the microphone on the earphones work.
