Windows 10 Duplex Printing ONLY flipping on short side

No matter what settings are used (flip long edge or short edge) Windows 10 ONLY prints flipping on the short edge. This is  Windows-wide problem NOT specific to a program. I've tried Word, Open Office Writer, Notepad, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox... ALL Windows printing "two-sided" is ONLY short edge. Even the latest drivers from Brother (the printer is a Brother HL-L8350CDW) do not help. I recently changed from a Mac which was more capable of printing properly, as my wife's Windows 7 laptop. This seems to be a Windows 10 Pro specific issue- and NO ONE has a solution.

Any ideas? It sucks having to make a document or save it on the PC, and move to my 10 year old Mac to print it b/c Windows is failing to follow a basic settings option properly.

Here's what fixed it for my Brother HL-L8360CDW printer.  It looks like the problem is with the "Brother Generic Jpeg Type2 Class Driver".  I installed the Brother driver: "Y16D_C1-hostm-130.EXE".  The problem here is that this EXE doesn't actually install the driver, it just uncompresses the files.  You have to find: dpinstx64.exe and run that.

Go to "Settings, Devices, Printers & scanners", click on your printer and click "Manage".  Click "Printer Properties" and select the "Advanced" tab.  Make sure the driver is the one specific to your printer.  In my case that was "Brother HL-8360CDW series".  Click on "Printing Defaults" and a more elaborate option menu pops up.  A little more than halfway down there is a "2-sided / booklet" drop down.  Select "2-sided" then below it click on "2-sided Settings(X)" and select the "Long Edge (Left)" option which will actually affect the printer behavior.

Hope this works for everybody.

January 2019 update.

There are new versions of the Brother software suite (A2) and the driver (1.40) available on the Brother support site https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll8360cdw\_us\_eu\_as&os=10013 .  I also found installation instructions: https://help.brother-usa.com/app/answers/detail/a\_id/120508 .  The new driver file is Y16D_C1-hostm-140.EXE.  The hack above still works, but you are probably better off following the instructions.

To everyone who thanked me, you're welcome -- especially the person who nominated me for sainthood!

Aha! So installing a driver for Window 10 doesn't always actually install and use the driver!? What an idiotic problem to have. LOL

That DID fix it. I had installed it, twice actually... removed it and reinstalled it to ensure it was done, and both with the latest version- no change. I would have NEVER thought that installing device-specific drivers would be met with a Windows "screw you, I'm keeping the generic one instead" response from the OS. *smh*

Thanks for that info. Once I found that and changed it to the specific drivers, it's working fantastic!

You saint! I thought I was going crazy, exact same printer and everything. Thank you for laying out such clear instructions.

That doesn't explain why Windows 7 can print just fine by selecting the long edge in any/all of those applications. Windows 10 is the ONLY one doing this.

What software are you using aside from the Brother software (downloaded the latest version the other day) to get that screen- NOTHING like that appears in the software I just downloaded from their site.

In the printer settings in Windows, I get this option- which is what I've had it set to for EVERY print attempt.

Printer settings are specific to your printer driver, not to applications and not to Windows. It may well be that you set your printer to short edge flipping only. Here is the setup panel I see for my own Brother printer:
