Cannot boot from USB Windows 10 UEFI

I'm having difficulty booting from a USB flash drive. Although the USB drive appears in the boot menu, when clicked the screen goes blank, then sends me back to the boot menu within seconds.

I have tried using several different USB creation utilities, including Rufus. This occurs regardless of whatever I'm booting.

My system:

Win10x64 Pro

i7-8700

64 GB RAM

UEFI Boot

All GPT disks

USB 3.0

SanDisk Ultra 64GB flash drive

Windows for home | Windows 10 | Install and upgrade

Hi Scott. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Create the bootable media over again using only the Media Creation tool, on another PC if necessary: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m.... Instructions are in the center of the downloads page by clicking the + sign next to Creating Installation Media section.

Then boot the media by powering up PC while pressing the BIOS Boot menu key shown here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutor...

Choose the media only as a UEFI device. If it's not working then enter UEFI Setup to check settings for UEFI (enabled), CSM or Legacy BIOS (disabled), Secure Boot and Fast Boot (disable if necessary until after install), and Boot Priority Order has only the WIndows Boot Manager listed first. Save changes and Exit.

If it fails report back the exactly error or other failure behavior.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Just in case, remember that may not realize is the Flash Drive has to be formatted as FAT 32 in order to boot as UEFI..

It also has to be an x64 version of the OS.

The tool recommended will create such a flash drive but downloading directly to a Flash Drive can be slow

They must be specially created to boot on UEFI Systems which only MCT does for both UEFI and Legacy. Rufus will only do one or the other. Likewise other boot disks which may or may not need to be booted as UEFI, you have to try and see. Follow their maker's instructions.

I will tell you that you'll have much better Windows performance using built-in Defender which always offers best Windows performance with least issues, and is from Microsoft who knows how to protect their OS best.

And for backup imaging all experts recommend free Macrium which just works. We refer everyone to it and nobody ever needs to ask how to make the rescue media - it just works. https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-re...

    Hope those help.

Thank you. This worked, but why? I'm attempting to create other USB boot media, i.e. my antivirus software, Acronis backup, etc. Regardless of what I do, I cannot get my system to recognize it. So, what is it about this process that worked? Is it simply that I must use Fat32 and will need to skip 4GB files?
