recover files on USB thumb corrupted by being removed while working

Hi,

System: Windows Home 10. Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134

I hope someone can help me. I stupidly corrupted my thumb drive by removing while the computer was still shutting down. Now the system cannot read any files on the disk.

The computer boots perfectly and all other aspects of the system work as usual.

When I open File Explorer the USB drive is not listed.

When I view the device  in Control Panel>Devices and Printers, it displays an icon and "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed).

If I right-click on the icon and choose "Troubleshoot", the troubleshooter is unable to resolve the problem.

Is there anything I can do?

Thanks

Patrick

    Hi PatrickLee2

My name is Fernando. I am an Independent Advisor. I am here to guide you with your usb drive.

If you are using Windows 10 or a lower version then carry out the following steps to repair the USB Flash Drive:

    1. Insert the USB drive into the USB port of your system.
    2. Go to My Computer>Removable Disk icon.
    3. Right click the Removable Disk Icon and open its Properties.
    4. Click on the Tools tab.
    5. Click “Rebuild” button.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any questions and let me know how it goes.

    Respectfully,

    Fernando Y.

Hi Fernando, I much appreciate your help.  However, this did not solve my problem.

Let me go through it with you:

I do not have (or do not know how to find) a "My Computer" option. If I type My Computer into the search box it takes me to the Control Panel. From there I can go to "Devices and Printers", where I find the icon for "Unknown USB device".

If I right-click on this and click Properties, I get a box with only two tabs: "General" and "Hardware". There is no "Tools" tab. Under the "Hardware" tab it says: "Device status: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)"

There is another Properties link within that box, which takes me to another box with the following tabs:

    General - Driver - Details - Events.

Under Events I found the following report:

Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&8b74c98&0&2 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

    Last Device Instance Id: USB\VID_054C&PID_0BC7\180E2961030454

    Class Guid: {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

    Location Path: ACPI(_SB_)#ACPI(PCI0)#ACPI(XHC_)#ACPI(RHUB)#ACPI(HS02)

    Migration Rank: 0xF000FFFFFFFF0032

    Present: false

    Status: 0xC0000719

Does this help you to take me any further.
