Install Windows 10 on a 4TB hard drive

Windows 10 went into total meltdown (again).

When copying files from my had drive to an external drive I noticed a lot of I/O errors, so I bought a new hard drive (4TB). Since Windows would not boot I downloaded the latest Windows 10 64-bit iso file and burned it to a DVD. The iso DVD is UEFI compliant (I was able to boot in UEFI mode) but the installer refused to install on my disk (no reason given - just a directive to check the non-existent error logs). I contacted Microsoft and then had me use the DISKPART utility on the DVD. The DISKPART utility is up to date (>2003) and it created a GUID Partition Table instead of a MBR Partition Table. I then tried the installer. It got further before refusing to install Windows. This time it gave a reason. It will only install Windows on a small drive with an MBR Partition Table - not on a drive with a GUID Partition Table. Apparently Microsoft has not updated the installer program since before 2003.

Where can I get an iso file that will install Windows 10 on a 4TB hard drive?

    Iacrumb,

Yes I did. WIN10_1803_ENGLISH_X64.ISO. The problem is that is DOES NOT WORK! The DVD is UEFI compliant but the installer is NOT. It refuses to install Windows on any drive which is not <2TB with a MBR Partition Table.

Did you make a boot-able DVD in your process?

This approach requires that Windows is actually running. Since Windows refuses to boot and I have had to replace the hard drive there is no Windows to run.

All these approaches assume that Windows is running. If it was running I would not need to install it.

Have you ever actually used this technique? The Windows 10 iso DVD is UEFI complient and at least one of the utilities on the DVD is UEFI complient. But the installer on the iso is NOT. It refuses to install Windows on any hard drive with a GUID Partition Table. Apparently the installer program has not been updated since the UEFI standard was adopted in 2003. This is why I am asking if you have actually used this technique with a GPT drive.

    Hi Robert

You will need a USB FLash drive (8GB min) then follow the steps on the article below to create UEFI compliant Installation media so you will be able to access the full 4TB of your new drive . . .
