How do you uninstall and reinstall drivers in Windows 10?

If I ever have an issue with my Windows 10 laptop, I would probably uninstall and reinstall certain drivers. I know how to uninstall them (just go to control panel and uninstall a program), but how do I reinstall them? Because if you don’t have the proper drivers, Windows won’t run properly?

    Hi Charlie,

To uninstall driver from Windows 10, you have to :

    1. Press WINDOWS + X
    2. Click on "Device Manager"
    3. Click on the device group you want to uninstall (example : video card)
    4. Right click on the device you want to uninstall
    5. Click on "Remove"

In order to reactivate the device and install device's driver, you have to:

    1. Press WINDOWS + X
    2. Click on "Device Manager"
    3. Click on "Detects Hardware change" (monitor icon)

If you remove some driver, the only one problem you will have is that the device which drivers are removed won't work. For example, if you remove your wifi network card, then you won't be able to connect with wireless connection anymore (unless you reinstall the driver for wifi)

P.s: Please, if the answer resolve your issue, click on Yes. Thanks.

Hi Charlie. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

You really only need to uninstall a driver if it's malfunctioning and then that's a step to troubleshoot it: uninstall in Apps & Features, also in Device Manager.

Then reinstall from the PC or device maker's Support Downloads web page the latest version of that driver.

You should also regularly check for newer to Update your drivers from the PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

Windows Update will also update some drivers but this is not enough in Windows 10. You need to make sure you don't have newer or better ones from the device manufacturer.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Ho charlie

The correct device drivers for your system are always available for free on the support page for your PC/Laptop on the manufacturers website

You should only ever get drivers from either that Support Page or Windows Update, never use any of those spurious driver download websites, or indeed never use those driver updater utilities, they can and will brick your system.
