PC will not wake up from sleep and NVidia driver fails to install

Hello!!

It looks like I stumbled upon the black hole in troubleshooting "Windows 10 will not wake up from Sleep" + "Microsoft NVIDIA drivers preventing full install of NVIDIA drivers from NVIDIA website" which I have been tackling for days with Dell to no avail. I honestly believe it's Microsoft's latest build/updates causing this problem that kept my monitor from waking up from sleep mode. In my 18+ years using Dell's equipment, I never experienced anything like this. I am an avid Security Researcher, a Jr level Cybersecurity Analyst. I am tech savvy and this stubborn problem will not disappear.

I have reformatted, wiped system to no avail. I also looked at past post with the same problem but the thread was locked.

As for the NIVIDIA drivers dilemmas. When I format my system and do a fresh install of latest Windows 10 build, I have to do so without ethernet connection to keep Microsoft from installing the video drivers on my system while I try to install the binaries from NVIDIA site - full install. After removing ethernet cable, preventing Microsoft updates from installing drivers/updates, I was able to install NIDIA full install with no problems. BTW, I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070.

Never in my life have I ever had this kind of problems. I have a Dell XPS L502x laptop, for about 9 years, it went from Windows 7, 8 to 10 to current build today, not one issues, not one!!! But my new system is having the following problems listed above.

    I don't think I will approach that possibility but replacing the video card should be no problem.  I would check the connectors on any errant monitors to see if anything is bent or broken.  The current card may not be seated all the way.

    If you have another system, you might try the bad monitor with the other system.

    Guess what? I performed another troubleshooting steps.

    I have 2x 24" monitors, decided to just use 1x 24" monitor. And... ? It wakes up from sleep/off mode. I tested this on all ports, same results. I did so for the 2nd 24" monitor while only leaving one plugged in. And... ? It wakes up just fine from sleep/off mode.

    Looks like a video card issues while both monitors are plugged in, cause one other the other are not getting the wake up power on when mouse/keyboard are moved.

    Been with Dell and they're procrastinating in responding and abided my warranty. Hrmmm… (taps on table...)

    You title says the system is sleeping, is that the case or is it the Display is turned off?

    Have you tried any other outputs to the monitor and which one are you currently using?  Have you tried another monitor or TV?  Any extra cables laying around?

    It looks like your system may have other video outputs not related to the Nvidia card, so you could even remove it for testing, if you wanted.

    If you are running an 8th generation processor, it must be a fairly new system...

    I had problems with one of my Dell systems and did have to go to the Nvidia site and use that driver.  If you can get to the install settings, it should give an option of doing a clean install of that driver by checking the box.

    You should also be able to use the Device Manager to uninstall the Nvidia Display adapter and check the box to remove all drivers.  If there is more than one set of drivers on the system, it may install a second, older set so the uninstall may have to be done again.  Hopefully, you will not need to go through this.  If you have already done a clean install of the drivers, the problem may lie elsewhere.

    Thanks for your response. Yes, I'm using the 8th Generation Intel processor - i7-8700K. GTX-1070 Nvidia card. I was just going to suggest testing with a different monitor just to see if there is any difference. Thanks for bringing that up! 

    As for uninstalling Nvidia drivers from Device Manager, I can't do this fast enough to get Nvidia full install and yes, I always use the "clean install." - Custom Install, never used Express as it's just for upgrading.

    It's definitely somewhere that is keeping Nvidia drivers from being installed because it's conflicted with Microsoft drivers... it uses old versions that prevents full version of latest drivers from installing. Either way, without going through all that Device Manager install, I decided to use the fastest method, just unplug Ethernet cable, done.

    Thanks again for your feedback regarding swapping the monitor out for testing.

    Hello,

    To answer your question:

    1. I already answered that.. But I'll repeat. When my monitors go to sleep or turn off after 2hrs (no hibernation) of inactivity or any time for that matter, when I move the mouse or tap keyboard, screen stays black. I'm forced to shut down and give it a cold boot.
    2. The error I get from the full install binaries from Nvidia site is: "You're running an older version of video drivers, please install latest drivers from Nvidia Geforce Experience." How is this possible? A fresh install of windows 10 - wipe, format, reinstall windows, then run windows updates to get latest drivers and security patches plus other features in the update process. After all that is done, I run the Nvidia drivers from Nvidia website - 

    417.01-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql and I tried the next update: 417.22-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql

    None of them worked, gave errors, no ID or numbers to search. I, instead, started all over again but removing the ethernet cable, reinstall Windows 10, then install Nvidia drivers, full install was a breeze. There was NO activity in the background in the background to begin with that caused the error or prevented full install of Nvidia drivers.

    The link you gave me is for laptops. I am running a desktop, already gave you my desktop specs and model info. I already manipulated the power services. Never in my life have I ever had this issues with "monitor sleep/off mode." Looks like another person created the same issues last year in 2017, no one from Microsoft was able to resolve it. I know for a fact the problem may be related to KB4462930.

    I know this because before I updated to KB4462930, it would wake up from sleep/off mode. This is not a Dell drivers issues. I think Microsoft is behind the drivers department for the system/Nvidia drivers. That's my opinion. Additionally, this happened two versions back from Windows 10 updates - the System updates/drivers. I never had problems with build 1807, but 1809 seems to be buggy.

    I also played with the Deep Sleep Power options in BIOS that Dell updated my BIOS version to 1.1.3, still nothing. I've done more wipe/reformat/reinstall Windows 10 in one month span than I used to in the entire year or 2.

    Hello,

    Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

    I understand it feels frustrating when the features doesn’t work the way they are supposed to work.

    1. What happens when you try to wake the PC from sleep?
    2. What is the error you get when you try to install the NVidia drivers?

    For the issue related to sleep mode, I suggest you to refer the suggestions by Buzzybuzz dated 12^th^ August 2015.

    Also, the graphics driver installation may fail, if there is another instance of the same installer running on the background, you can disable the automatic driver updates by changing the settings.

    1. Press Windows key + R. This will open Run. Alternatively, you can go to Start and search for ‘Run’.
    2. In Run dialog box, type sysdm.cpl and hit enter.
    3. Click on the hardware tab.
    4. Now click on Device Installation Settings.
    5. Click on the No radio button and click on OK.
    6. Now click on Apply and OK.

    As you have mentioned that you were able to install the NVidia drivers, please let us know if you are facing issues after installing the drivers.
