HP printers frequently install a DOT4 port for use by the printer. The DOT4 protocol is supposed to allow multiple data packets for different devices (e.g., the printer, scanner, fax components of an "all-in-one" printer) to be transmitted simultaneously on one channel.
However, HP also installs a DOT4 port for HP laser printers that don't have any other components. Because DOT4 is part of IEEE 1284.4, which is an enhancement of the parallel port spec, perhaps HP does this for its older printers that were originally designed for use with parallel ports.
