Microsoft bundles free Wordpad program which provides a reasonable degree of formatting also. You can use that.

Type Wordpad in Cortana search and you will get that.

Otherwise, you can use Word Online also which provides all important functionalities of desktop Word.

Login to Office online @ https://www.office.com and click Word there.

    To type a letter:

    • Start menu > Windows Accessories > Wordpad

To print the letter you just created, with Wordpad still open:

    • File menu > Print

To save your letter for future reference, with Wordpad still open:

    • File menu > Save

Although buying a program is a choice, no it's not something you have to do.

Windows comes with WordPad. If your formatting needs are very slight, WordPad may be adequate for you.

But WordPad is really more of a glorified text editor than a real word processor. If you want significant formatting capability, you have several choices:

    1. Buy Microsoft Office, which comes with Word.
    2. Buy Microsoft Word by itself.
    3. Lease Office 365 (you can't buy it), which comes with Word.
    4. Download and install the free OpenOffice, which comes with a word processor that's largely (but not completely) compatible with Word.
    5. Download and install the free LibreOffice, which comes with a word processor that's largely (but not completely) compatible with Word.
    6. Buy Corel WordPerfect. which is my personal favorite.

My recommendation is that you try WordPad and see whether its capabilities are adequate for your needs. As a second step, download, install and try the free LibreOffice. You may need to go no further than that.

Hi brengear ... do you have a Microsoft account?

If not you can create one for free.

If so then go to https://onedrive.com and login there with your Microsoft account.

From there you can open word online and create and store your files there.

As well as print from there too.
