OneDrive conflicting with Carbonite

I've used Carbonite for years with no problem, but since moving to Windows 10 was having real problems with Carbonite getting stuck part way, etc.. Have been told that this is because it conflicts with OneDrive. I wasn't even aware that I was using OneDrive, and don't particularly want to do so, as I have no need for document-sharing and so forth.

However, it looks as if OneDrive has been 'kidnapping' all sorts of files and folders and, when I try to copy the item and move it back to a desktop folder, the system just keeps saying 'Copying from OneDrive to OneDrive'  How do I stop this happening, and how can I save things where I know they can be properly backed-up?

HELP!

If it's any reassurance I've had my 15+ gb of User folders (Desktop, Documents, pictures, etc) rooted in OneDrive from each one's Properties > Location tab for years and never lost a file. I do the same thing with Google drive so I have redundancy. It's also great to be able to pull up a file on my phone or on another PC via the web whenever and wherever I am.

But if you don't want to choose Desktop, Documents or Pictures User folders to sync in real time to OneDrive via Folder Protection in the Autosave settings per the tutorial I provided, then yes you can drag or copy any folders you want backed up into the OneDrive folder. The only drawback is that it now lives in the OneDrive folder instead of Documents, Desktop, etc. But you can send a shortcut to one of those from right click menu if you want.

Hi BC. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

OneDrive can do the same thing Carbonite does for free up to 5gb, storing your selected files or Documents, Pictures and Desktop folders in the cloud using a new automatic sync folder feature shown here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/116029-turn...

Google Drive offers even more letting you choose any and all User or other folders to sync up to 15gb free in the cloud. I use both for Cloud backup.

If you prefer neither and want to stay with the paid service then you can disable OneDrive by right clicking it's cloud icon in the bottom right System Tray, choose Settings, then Accounts tab, then Unlink from this PC. It will then go dormant leaving whatever you have in the cloud if you want and of course on your PC providing you did not inadvertently have On Demand checked where it only stores the chosen files in the cloud until you want them: https://blogs.office.com/en-us/2017/05/11/intro.... So you could put 5gb into the cloud for Safe Keeping, unlink OneDrive and those files will still be there stored safely to access by a web browser or signing back into OneDrive at any time.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Thanks, Greg,

I haven't had a chance yet to watch the tutorial (silly of me to post a response when I hadn't already done that, I know!)  Currently up to my eyes in last-minute Christmas cards and foodstuffs but I'll get this sorted in the next day or so, and will let you know how I get on. It looks as if you've been able to answer all my concerns/queries, so thank you very much!

Thanks, Greg, for the quick and detailed response - much appreciated!

My main concern with the free OneDrive backup is really based on recent experiences with forced updates on various things - especially the most recent Windows 10 update which seems to have totally jiggered up my Hotmail/Outlook access via preferred browser Chrome, a number of other issues, and has made the entire system slow and 'jumpy'.

I'm scared that, if I trust really important stuff to OneDrive, some changes will be made to it too, at some point,  and I'll lose it all. (At least with a paid service, I could scream and shout at them!)

Is there any way of setting OneDrive (rather than disabling it completely) so that I can consciously save items to it, but can also choose to save to Carbonite for others?
