Drag and Drtop Broken

About a week or two ago, Windows 10 stopped letting me drag and drop.  When I try, I get a red circle with a line through it when i drag a file or folder over any drive on my computer.  I can cut and paste without any problem, but drag and drop wont work.  I have full administrator privileges for all drives and files on my computer.  I have rebooted many times over this period and the problem persists.  I have tried holding down the escape key as some have suggested and that does not help.  I have also restarted explorer through Task Manager and that does not help.  I have run Norton, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware, and they found no problems.  Is there any fix for this?  It is really annoying.

    Hi,

    1. yes I am the administrator on the computer.
    2. Drag and drop will not work for shared files and folders and it will not work for files and folders that are not shared.
    3. I am the owner of the files and directories as shown under the Security tab of file Properties.  I also have full control "Allow" in the security tab.

It does not make any difference if it is on a local hard drive, or a usb hard drive that I can attach.

It also does not work on shared directories when I connect to another computer over the network, even though drag and drop works fine on that computer when I physically go to that computer to work.

Are you willing to Edit Windows Registry?

Before you do, create a backup of the Registry so it will be easier to restore should you experience issues.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17127/...

Start > Type Regedit > Press Enter

    Windows 10 -- 64-bit system

    Navigate to this key

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*

Click Edit > New > Dword 32-bit Value

    Name it DefaultDropEffect

    Right on DefaultDropEffect

Select which option you wish to use and type 0, 1, 2, or 4.

0 - no action will be performed,

1 - by default, the dragged file or folder will be copied,

2 - the dragged object will be moved,

4 - a shortcut will be created for the dragged file or folder.

Repeat the same steps when you navigate to this key.

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects

Close Windows Registry and Reboot. Retry dragging and dropping.

It works for me, as you can see below:

So perhaps you can think of something you might have done to unwittingly cause a problem?

Hi, I ran both scans in Powershell as Administrator.  SFC found errors and fixed them on the first run.  The second run did not find anything.  I then ran DISM and it returned saying that the restore operation completed successfully.

But the problem is still there.

    Hi, Thomas,

Run the following scans then retry drag and drop. Use PowerShell (Admin) instead of Command Prompt. You'll find it in your Right click menu when you go to Start.
