Getting Access Denied Error When Trying To Rename A File.

How can I get Windows 10 to stop asking me for Administrator approval?  I sign into Windows as the Administrator and it recognizes me as the Administrator but whenever I want to rename, copy or move a file, it asks me for Administrator approval.  I'm the sole user of this computer and there are no other users listed.

I tried Command Prompt > Run as Administrator and typed:  net user administrator /active:yes    but that didn't solve the problem.

What else can I try?

    Hi Denise,

    Thank you for replying.

The above article applies for Windows 10 as well, however, follow the below steps to take the ownership of the files/folders.

Step 1: Right-click on the file or folder you want to take ownership of and click on Properties > Security tab.

Step 2: Click the Advanced button and click on Change link next to the Owner label.

Step 3: In the Select User or Group window, type your user account in the area which says Enter the object name to select and click OK.

Step 4: Also, to change the owner of all subfolders and files inside the folder, select the check box Replace owner on subcontainers and objects in the Advanced Security Settings window and click OK to change the ownership.

Step 5: Click the Add button under Permission Entry window and click Select a principal and select your account and set permissions to Full control and click OK.

Step 6: Then, check box the option Replace all existing inheritable permissions on all descendants with inheritable permissions from this object in the Advanced Security Settings window.

Step 7: Click on Apply > OK > Restart the computer once for the changes to take effect, and check for the issue.

For the Method 2, just click on the Start Menu and search for Change User Account Control Settings and hit Enter. Then, follow the steps in the above post to change the Account Control Settings to Never Notify.

    Hope it helps.

    1. Since when are you facing this issue?

I installed Windows 10 about a month ago and the problem started at that time.  The files have been on hard drives in my computer for a very long time, while I was running Windows XP.

    1. Were there any changes made to the computer prior to this issue?

I added two more sticks of RAM.

    1. Do you get this error when modifying all the files and folders or a particular file or folder?

I get the problem when modifying every file that was on hard drives prior to installing Windows 10.  I don't need Administrator approval to move/copy/rename files that I have created since installing Windows 10.

There is no Advanced tab mentioned in Method 1.  The instructions are for Windows 7 and 8.  I'm running Windows 10 version 1803.

There is no Change User Account Control Settings in Method 2.  The only options available are Change Account Type and Remove User Accounts and the only option under the Administrator account is to change the password.  Again, settings for Windows 10 version 1803 are different from settings for other versions of Windows 10.

    Hi Denise,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To have better clarity on the issue, answer the below-listed questions and get back to us.

    1. Since when are you facing this issue?
    2. Were there any changes made to the computer prior to this issue?
    3. Do you get this error when modifying all the files and folders or a particular file or folder?

Meanwhile, try the below methods and see if this helps.

Method 1: Take The Ownership Of The File/Folder.

I suggest you to follow the section Issue 1: I receive an "Access Denied" error message when I try to access or work with files and folders from "Access Denied" or other errors when you access or work with files and folders in Windows, restart the computer once after following the steps, and check for the issue.

Method 2: Turn Off User Account Control.

Note: User Account Control (UAC) is feature that helps prevent malicious programs, also known as 'malware', from damaging a system. UAC stops the automatic installation of unauthorized applications. UAC also prevents unintended changes to system settings. If you have to disable this feature or option for any troubleshooting reason, then please enable it as soon as the troubleshooting is done. A security risk may result by using administrative credentials to run an unknown program. Only run programs that you trust as an administrator.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and the R key from your keyboard and type Control and hit Enter.

Step 2: Select Small icons from the View by category and click on User Accounts > Change User Account Control Settings.

Step 3: Then, change it to Never notify by sliding down the slider, restart the computer once after making the above changes, and check for the issue.

Give it a shot and let us know of any changes.
