Dial Up Modem Won't Work On Windows 10

I have just updated to Windows 10 on 3 computers, and have 3 Zoom USB Modems (#3095).

I cannot send or receive any data via dialup on these modems.

I have an 8-year-old machine that is still running Windows 7, and the modems work fine on that one.

I called Zoom Tech support today, and was told that the drivers that I had updated to are the correct ones.

The Tech Support Rep at Zoom said that dialup modems worked on Windows 10 early on, and stopped working entirely once a Windows 10 was released several years ago.  He told me that they haven't been able to get their dialup modems to work on Windows 10 since then, and said that he knows of no other analog (dialup) modems that work on Windows 10.

He recommended going back to Windows 7, which I'd prefer not to do.  Has there been any workaround that enables dialup through Windows 10?

I thought that all 3.0 USB ports were backwards compatible with 2.0 and even 1.1.  Is that not accurate?  Is there any way that there is an update or some other setting that will make a 3.0 port run with a 2.0 modem?

USB 3.0 is nominally backwards compatible, but it doesn't always work out that way.  There is no update or setting that will change the nature of your hardware.

I received the US Robotics modem and had trouble with it right away, even after uploading the latest driver and firmware upgrade.  I called the US Robotics tech support (overseas person - very difficult to understand), and after various tests, we were able to use the modem to call my cell phone.  I was then able to dial into one of my dialup providers, and eventually able to access the internet, slowly, but that's what you expect with dialup.  I couldn't send an email from the dialup account, although I can through ethernet.

He said that the problem was due to my dialup provider, and that I should call them.

I ran the troubleshooter, and the troubleshooter said that this was an older device and won't work on a USB 3.0.  It said to try it on a 2.0 USB port.  I have only 3.0 USB ports on my new computer.

I tried it on 2 other machines (also set up for Windows 10), and was able to send emails out - intermittently - on 2 of my 3 dialup accounts through USB 2.0 ports.  It would not send emails out through the 3.0 ports on these machines.

I thought that all 3.0 USB ports were backwards compatible with 2.0 and even 1.1.  Is that not accurate?  Is there any way that there is an update or some other setting that will make a 3.0 port run with a 2.0 modem?

Glad to help! If US Robotics say theirs works with Windows 10, that's a pretty good indicator but there's no way to know for sure until you try it. All the best!

If Zoom can't get the modems to work in Windows 10, why would you think that anyone here would be able to?  Have you looked into other modems?

Hi Great, thanks for your question. I'm Graeme, a Microsoft Community expert and fellow user.

If the company hasn't released updated drivers for the latest versions of Windows 10, unfortunately there's no way to get the modems running unless you either run an earlier version of Windows 10 in a virtual machine, or reinstall an earlier version of Windows 10.

You could also purchase a newer Dial-up modem. It's up to the manufacturer to keep their drivers up to date - Microsoft only goes back so far when continuing support for older hardware.

Let me know if you need further support!
