Windows 10: Display settings change everytime I unplug my laptop from my monitor

I have windows 10 on my computer, and I have both a laptop and a monitor at my desk. When I have the laptop connected to the monitor, I want the display in "Extend Screens" mode. It used to automatically go to "extend screens" mode whenever I plugged into the monitor, but for the past few weeks, it defaults to just using one of the screens until I go to display settings and choose the "extend screens" option.  Then it works fine until I unplug the laptop again. How do I get my display settings to save as extend screens again?

    Hi Carolyn

It is likely your driver needs to be reinstalled or updated.

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Device Manager

    Expand Display adapters

Right click the current display adapter

    Click Properties

    Click Driver tab

Click Rollback driver if the option is available

    If not

Right click the current display adapter

    Click Uninstall

Check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.'

    Exit Device Manager

    Restart

Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.

Ok so I was able to uninstall the driver, but I can't install it back. There were no available update in the windows center. Also going to Intel and trying to install the driver from there (since my old driver was from intel) also didn't work since my the driver the website claims I'm compatible with won't install on my system. I used to have an Intel HD graphics 530 driver, but none of the new ones work with my system.
