Generic USB Hub Device Missing

I've been having issues with my USB ports and thought it may have been related to an issue I've had for some time now. This issue shows up as 'Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)' in the device manager. In an effort to resolve this problem, I've attempted a few fixes found online. I have tried hardware troubleshooting, power plan editing, and turning off fast startup, all with no results. Some fixes online involve a device called 'Generic USB Hub', but that device does not appear in my device manager. Is there a reason it isn't appearing or does it need to be installed? If it needs to be installed, how would I go about doing that?

    Hi,

You might right click on it and select "Update Driver", but if the Descriptor Request is denied it may not be possible to determine a "Driver For What"...

You might go to Intel.com and look for drivers for your specific Chipset...

    In particular https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-

The chipsets it applies to are listed near the bottom...

You may have a 3rd party USB Controller Chip... My machine uses Asmedia for instance... but there are others...

Look to see what is available from your computer manufacturer and\or the Chip's manufacturer..

    Hi,

I have an older Intel machine, but from what I can tell, you are missing the actual Intel Chipset..

Try updating the driver for the device and see what shows up on this screen...

If you uncheck the box for "Show Compatible Hardware" a large list will appear that you can browse through...

The driver updates from intel.com may have fixed the issue of my mouse not being recognized well, but the error is still showing in the device manager. Could this problem ever become something problematic or could I just leave it alone?
