Windows Update is killing my data and causing more bills in my life.

How can you turn off Windows 10 Updates forever?!!

When I try to disable them they come back on! Or if I try to post pone updates they still manage to be forced on me when I don't want them.

I have to pair my laptop with my mobile phone for internet access while I am on the go for work. However, unknown to me, Windows downloads upgrades in the background. This causes major data overages on my phone bills. What a lack of human control and basic human choice.

This is so upsetting to me; If I can't find a straight forward solution I will be forced to move to Linux/Ubuntu or worst of all mac OS :(

    Hello }{amid,

I'm Independent Advisor and Microsoft MVP, here to help you with your question.

Try setting your connection as Metered. Windows will not download automatic updates on Metered connection.

    1. Right click Start Button or press Windows + X keys and click Settings.
    2. In Settings app, select Network & Internet entry.
    3. Then click Status option under Network & Internet.
    4. Moving on, click Change connection properties link on next screen.
    5. Finally, toggle the Set as metered connection option to On. This should set the connection as Metered one.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi }{amid

Here are some steps you can apply to prevent Windows 10 from using your mobile data.

    Option 1:

Set your Internet connection as metered:

Hi Hamid. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 9 year Windows MVP and Independent Advisor, here to help you.

First try the methods here to Manage Updates after Version 1803:

    https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/manage-windows-up...

You can block Windows Updates by setting a Metered Connection, see here:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-...

More prominent tech columnists and experts are recommending to do this:

    https://www.computerworld.com/article/3241241/m...

Then you can install them when you want. There are even good reports from users now who've had them shut off for awhile and only install the Version Upgrades twice a year from the Media Creation Tool which is the most stable method anyway, and includes all previous Updates rolled in. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

If you want to express your opinion on this to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. They will not even see it here. This is a tech forums staffed mostly by volunteers trying to help others with your problems.

If you want to post back a Share link from your Feedback here others who see this thread can vote it up and add to it. I will vote up the feedback with my MVP badge and also monitor and track the issue for you.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

However, I wasn't able to set up a metered connection because there is no "advanced" setting on the Wifi network settings screen, I'm on Windows 10 Home edition - build 1803.

I've disabled the updates in Service Manger, but looks like there is another service that comes back and turns it back on. When I try to disable this second one I am not permitted even though I'm the admin.

Overall this used to be configurable in previous Windows versions. I will take it up with their Feedback Hub folks as you have suggested.

I also looked at my usage history and over 6 gigs were from windows updates in the last month, last one being yesterday. My actual usage from internet browsing for my work was around 200 megs, go figure!.. useless, time consuming, and expensive updates.
