    Here’s how to password-protect a folder on Windows 10:

Navigate to the folder and make sure all files you want to encrypt are inside.

Right-click on the folder and open Properties.

Under the General tab, click Advanced.

Check the “Encrypt contents to secure data” box.Encrypt contents to secure data

Choose “Apply changes to this folder only” and click OK.Apply changes to this folder only

Backup your encryption key when prompted.

When I follow these instructions, the option "Encrypt Contents to Secure Data" is grayed out, and I can not check the box. (I can only check the box to compress the file.) I have tried on the regular file and on a zipped file. Neither allows me to encrypt.  ???

    Hi Halana

If the option 'Encrypt Contents to Secure Data' is greyed out, that means you have Windows 10 Home installed, the built in encryption is only available in Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise Editions .. .

You need to use a 3rd party utility to encrypt your data, because your Windows does not have that functionality

The free version of Secret folder, will allow you to encrypt a folder securely on your PC and you can drop all your other folders or data into that folder, or the free version of VeraCrypt will allow you to encrypt your data on your hard drive . . .

Hi Halana. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 9 year Windows MVP and Independent Advisor, here to help you.

What I do is download the popular 7 zip program, open it's File Manager, choose the file in the Explorer, then click the green Add button to create an archive, password it, click OK. Then test opening the file from it's location in the same place as the souce file. If it opens delete the source file.

I've never had one fail so can recommend it.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Hi Halana,

I would like to help you. Use system resources

The first method to password protect a folder in Windows 10 is via the Folder properties. If you’re not familiar with using a third-party compression tool for this job, Windows OS has you covered. The procedure is rather simple.

Just make sure you have all the files inside before encrypting the folder. You can apply only one or the other (compress it or encrypt it) with system resources.
