connect external dvd player windows 10

I recently bought an external cd/dvd drive.  When it came, the laptop could see the drive, but the tray would not open, after contacting the seller I sent it back as faulty.  I have just bought another one.  The tray opens and I can hear it reading the disc ok, but the computer cannot see the drive.  This can't be a problem with missing software as it could see the previous drive but not this one.  I have got the system to look for it but it finds nothing.  I am stumped as to what the problem is.

You are right about the connection, that was the problem, but I found a way around that so the issue is not the external dvd player now.

The issue is where to find the generic driver I deleted, which I am not sure of the exact name of the file, and despite a long search on the microsoft website it wasn't in any of the lists I checked.  I deleted it as that was what was suggested to fix the dvd problem, but as it's plug and play, it was the wrong thing to do anyway as it could see a different external drive.

Obviously this driver file is not needed for what I am doing now, but I want to reinstall it, in case I need it in the future

If this doesn’t work try this fix by Kapil Arya:

    Try these steps:

    1. Open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges.
    2. Type the following command and hit Enter key:

    reg.exe add “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0” /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

    1. Exit the Command Prompt and reboot. Insert a disk to test and the optical or DVD drive should be visible now.

Default DVD/CD driver will not go away. So, there should not be a worry.

Let me know the make and model of your new DVD drive.

I did that, but nothing, the driver was not reinstalled.  I deleted the driver for 'generic device', the only other drive there is the hard drive, I think that was the wrong thing to do.  I didn't have the option of DVD?CD drives, so chose disc drives instead, I think this could have made things worse.
