Malwarebytes and Windows 10

Can anyone tell me in a simple way how to install Malwarebytes on a Windows 10 computer?

I have attempted it and when the installation falls over I am presented with a message reporting an Error 5 and no access to service.

I've looked on various forums and YouTube but can't find a solution that a) I can understand and b) actually works.

I'd appreciate any help.

Before I start, how does Defender "kick in"?

    Is it an automatic thing?

I must admit, I don't understand why Dell stick to this company.  It's always there when you buy a new computer and always part of the initial set up.  On my older computers in the past, it has always been the main perpetrator when everything slows down to snail's pace!

I always used the used the MS supplied Microsoft Security Essentials with my Windows 7 computer.  It seemed to do the job but it didn't prevent a ransomware attack I experienced just after my heart surgery in 2016.  That really buggered me up!

I can't remember now but I thought I actually had to download MSE, it wasn't a default thing.

You only need to mention McAfee and usually the problem has been found. This is why no expert in Forum where we see the most cases by the thousands recommends McAfee .

So uninstall it using the McAfee removal tool on their website to get all of its bloat out. Then restart your PC and install Malwarebytes and make sure Defender kicks in for adequate protection , since Microsoft who knows how to protect their operating system best.

    Hi Greg,

First of all I do not have access to another computer today.  Maybe tomorrow but it will only be a Windows 7 operating system.

The computer I am trying to install on is literally new out of the box.  It hasn't really had a chance to get messed up (yet)!

I am running the standard supplied McAfee package.  That will probably change when the yearly sub comes around - it's free at the moment so I'm taking advantage of it obviously.

    I'm getting no reported problems.

I am downloading directly from the Malwarebytes website.

Please see the response I have penned to Dexter Lien.

    Hi Barney

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

Did you right click the Malwarebytes setup file then click 'Run as administrator' to see if it installs?

    Also...

Could you confirm if this also happens in the default Administrator account?

    Open Start

    Type: cmd

    Right click CMD

    Click Run as administrator

    At the command prompt, type:

    net user administrator /active:yes

    Hit Enter

Close command prompt, restart, then try signing into the Administrator account.

    Try running the file again.

    Hi Andre,

I can do most of what you said with my limited ability, but you lost me slightly where I have underlined.

After the restart, where/how do I sign in as Administrator?

    Hi Dexter,

I've done as you said and I'm getting the same result.

First I get this after installing, (which obviously fails).

I click on OK and then I get this:

I still get the shortcut icon.  When I double click on it I get this:

    Please advise.

I have to tell you I am limited in my ability to get my head around this sort of thing so please go slowly!
