Synaptics touchpad doesn't work anymore on my HP laptop

Hi!

I have a HP ProBook 430 G3 with Windows 10.

After attempting to install the Windows Precision drivers, apparently unofficially(?), for my touchpad (which I had successfully done once in the past) my touchpad doesn't work anymore. I followed a manual installation procedure this time, by choosing the driver files in Device Manager. Only things that work are the clicky buttons and if I touch the touchpad in a very small area it does move the cursor, although in a weird, unnatural and useless way.

I've tried afterwards to install the specific Synaptics drivers for my laptop from HP's website, but it resulted in the same problems. Uninstalling the touchpad driver from Device Manager and restarting, does fix the problem in a way. But since it automatically installs a generic 2005 driver, the cursor movement is not smooth at all and there is no support for two-finger scrolling. Anyways, when I restart a second time, Synaptics drivers are automatically installed and the same issues resurface.

If I forgot to mention something or if I was not clear, just tell me and I'll try to make it clear.

Thanks in advance!

You’re probably missing the synaptics pointing device driver - there is an update to this which removes the tab for this under Mouse settings & it is difficult to get it back without system restore or using a backup image.

You can use system restore to get back to a previous point before you installed the incorrect drivers.

    Hi,

My name is Angel. I am an Independent Advisor. Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Try the following solution from HP support forum:

Hold down the Windows key and press R

Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.

In the Device Manager window, expand Mice and other pointing devices.

Right click the Synaptics device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.

    When complete, shutdown the notebook.

Disconnect any peripheral, including any usb Mouse.

Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu. Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.

Let windows fully load for a few minutes before checking the touchpad function.

If your issue persist I suggest that you try performing a repair upgrade by following Andre Da Costa's instructions in his article to resolve the issue.

    Thanks for your answer!

After restoring the system once, the laptop booted to a black screen, without even reaching the login screen, with the cursor still not moving correctly.

I booted into the Troubleshoot screen via BIOS, and after trying a couple of different option, like startup repair, safe boot etc, I ended up performing a System Restore at a different time point. Now the issue is gone, and the touchpad responds properly.

    Thanks again!

Glad to hear all is resolved. Yes sometimes you may have to use an older restore point rather than the most recent.

    Thanks for answering!

I have tried this too but it didn't resolve the issue.
