how do I get the cert# from Microsoft,?!! so I can boot up my old X.P. home edition (service pack 3) hard drive? when the software is no longer supported and the PC cant find the provided # online ??  I followed all their instructions to  a "T" and it did not work!

I even have the original cert # but when booted ask you to type in the # provided, then does a search and fails.

I have over 10 years of documents and pictures files etc... and now have no way to recover it!

I purchased a refurbished PC with windows 10 on it and then soon learned I could not slave my old X.P. hard drive to it! WT??

Also learned you cant run X.P. on the new windows 10 systems! this just SUCKS!,

how am I suppose to get all my old stuff on the new PC?  now that my original PC's heat sink broke when I went to remove it to clean it!!!

I tried another PC with X.P. on it but did not have administrative rights and could not reset the password even after setting it to default in the bios and clearing them (does not work) there's another question?

I set my original hard drive as a slave (I think) but like I say when booted ask for the windows cert # cause the IP address changed etc... (different PC)

I was able to get in as a guest and wanted to copy the slave hard drive to a thumb drive, but it would only let me access the D: drive recovery file?? and not c: !!! uuggghhhhh!!!

So now I'm stuck, and guessing even if I get my old PC fixed and fire it back up its going to ask for the cert# witch MICROSOFT NO LONGER SUPPORTS! AND WILL NO LONGER VALIDATE MY ORIGINAL SOFTWARE SO I CAN KEEP USING IT!!

MICROSOFT STRIKES AGAIN!!

I'm now stuck using an old Acer laptop with Vista and a dual partition hard drive (prone to failure) and No longer supported as well!!

How nice!

I  need to recover the contents of the X.P. hard drive.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thank you.

You are not booting from that hard drive when you use it that way.

And there is a different size USB enclosure for laptops and desktops as the hard drives are a different size.

It's called a USB Hard Drive enclosure and they are between $25-35 approx.

You need IDE I would say going on age of computer, but most are dual IDE/Sata anyway

It was an idea for you to try as I can't give you software solutions for that older machine as the motherboard has problems.

Thanks bill, I checked them out, pheeew!  Glad I have another option! I dont have an extra $30-40 bucks to spend on and old PC, but the pictures etc... are worth it if I can get them retrieved, I also have several other hard drives etc... and hoping to recover them as well!

And yes the machines (have several) are old just like me!  and that's why I had no clue, cause I cant keep up anymore! lol My first PC was an IBM 486 with 256 m.b. of ram, and 35 web sites on the internet, wish I still had it, lol.

This particular machine was an hp pavilion a365c,I chipped to 1 gig of ram and a 500 gig hard drive, I Installed the Windows X.P. home edition myself and updated it with service pack 3 and it was all updated at the time support went away.

So been a good little machine till i cleaned it and the hold down on the main processor heat sink/fan combo broke when I moved the lever to disengage it, so should be nothing wrong with the hard drive, just need another fan mount on the mother board, ya good luck.

    I know T.M.I.

Anyway, thank you so much for the advice, I found a couple on amazon etc... and now know they are available! one had a dual docking bay and excepts the flash cards as well as the new hard drives and laptops, and A switch on the bottom for the older ones (I believe) Sweet!

I kinda figured there was something out there, just never took the time to look cause I am usually broke and my P.C's to slow yada yada.

Thank you for making my life easier and less stressful, (I actually had a brain hemorrhage on the Amazon site from my PC being so old and slow) and the site so cluttered!! that I had an overload!! (NO joke).

So this helps me a ton!!  thank you!!

take care, be safe and have a great day! ;)

1 stop and take a deep breath

    2 close your eyes

    3 count to ten

    4 relax.

    may save your life.

    Thank you for the reply!

What in the world is a u.s.b. Enclosure?? (never herd of it) and I dont have one,

are they expensive? as I am broke.

Sounds simple enough, but wont the hard drive still ask for the cert # and if so how do I get it? or get past it.

Thank you for the reply, I will look into the USB Enclosure pigtail harness, etc...

    have a good day.

    cccccyyyyyaaaaaaa!!

    Saving your files:

You can pull the Hard Drive and put it in a USB Hard Drive Enclosure > plug it into another Computer > and attempt to read and copy over your Data that way.
