"Windows Shell Experience Host stopped working"

Every day while working on my surface book 2, the Start menu will crash and close in front of me. I've noticed that this happens every time that the Shell Experience host stopped working. This keeps happening to me since the first day I got this machine. its been months with the issue, it'll happen more than 10 times a day sometimes.  Also the display of my SB2 freezes for a couple of seconds, and I need to turn the screen on and off.

I tried so many different fixes online. I even went to a Microsoft Store to and did a CLEAN windows installation, but the problem is back right after I got the Surface Book 2 back. I don't know what else to do. I have another Surface Book 2 at home that doesn't have this issue at all.

    Hey, thanks for the answer

Yeah I did all the methods you mentioned, then I gave up and brought the Surface Book 2 to a MS store. There they couldn't find the source of the problem so they decided to do a Clean installation of windows. So after installing windows again and all the drivers I went home and here I am with the same issue happening every day.

I'm not sure how to recreate the issue, it happens sometimes when using an UWP app such as Twitter, but not always. It just happened minutes ago when I uninstalled an app directly from the Start menu.

So now I have a brand new windows installation and the problem still here, I guess I'll wait for the next windows update and pray that someone inside Microsoft actually pays attention to their own products like the Surface book, and hope the issue is gone. Until then I'll try to live with this annoying bug, cause honestly I'm just tired of having to fix windows, I wish I could just use it with no problems, thats was the whole point of buying a Surface. Guess I was wrong.

    Hi Victor,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community Forums.

We can imagine how difficult it could be and we truly appreciate for the details and, time and effort that you have taken to work on this issue. However, we would need some more information regarding the issue.

    1. What is the version of Windows installed on your computer?
    2. Are you aware of any changes happened on the computer prior to this issue?

Windows Shell Experience host or shellexperiencehost.exe is a Microsoft Windows Process which is responsible for presenting built-in Universal apps in windows interface. It controls various graphical elements and handles desktop background behavior in windows. I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below and check for the result.

    Method 1: Install the updates.

I would suggest you to follow the Microsoft article on******Download Surface Book 2 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center.**

Note: Modifying Firmware settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

    Method 2: Re-registering the Start-Menu.

We can run the following command which will re-register the start menu from an application package present in your Windows Operating System.

    • Tap on the Windows key on your keyboard. Type: PowerShell
    • Right-click on the application which comes forth and select “Run as administrator”.
    • Copy and paste the following command and hit enter: Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
    • Restart the computer and then check for the issue.

    Method 3: Perform clean boot.

If the issue persist after Method 1 and method 2, I recommend you to follow the article **How to perform a clean boot in Windows**and also refer the section How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot .

Disclaimer: A 'clean boot' starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality while in a clean boot environment, however, that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after you have finished your troubleshooting.

If you would like me to provide additional advice, simply respond to this thread. I will get notified and I’ll reply to you as soon as I can.

    Hope it helps.
